The project was developed by producer-director Sophie Minissale and producer George Samios.
What is Sweet Oblivion about?
The film focuses on the Y HQ Gig Space as more than a place to hear live music: it explores what a physical youth venue can mean for young people’s expression, connection and belonging. The official descriptions from the Revelation Perth International Film Festival and the City of Vincent say the documentary weaves together stories of current attendees.

Minissale told PerthNow that the filmmakers wanted to capture both the venue’s history and what it means to the people who use it. She described it as a place where young people have taken the stage and found community. Those are the filmmaker’s reflections, rather than findings from an independent study of the venue or the film’s impact.
Why the Y HQ matters to the story
The Y WA describes the Y HQ as an all-ages live music space and youth hub. Its Sweet Oblivion gig series gives emerging Perth performers live-performance experience and offers underage music fans access to all-ages events. The Y says young people are directly involved in booking and delivering gigs, a practical example of the agency and participation that the documentary’s subject invites viewers to consider.

RTRFM, in its coverage of the film, notes that the Y has provided children’s services, recreation, camping and youth services for more than 100 years. That history helps place the venue in a broader community context; it does not by itself establish the documentary’s claims about outcomes for young people.
Who made the film, and how was it supported?
Sophie Minissale and George Samios developed Sweet Oblivion. PerthNow reported in March 2025 that the City of Vincent and Revelation Perth International Film Festival provided $8,000 in support for the film project. The report said the support did not cover all expenses; the figure is project funding, not a general grant amount or a claim that it paid the full production cost.

Runtime and festival screenings
The runtime is described differently in the available listings. PerthNow’s 22 March 2025 announcement called it a planned 10-minute film, while the FilmFreeway listing gives a runtime of 8 minutes 25 seconds and a completion date of 27 June 2025. The sources do not explain the difference.
FilmFreeway lists a world premiere at Revelation Perth International Film Festival on 13 July 2025, an international premiere at Doc’N Roll Film Festival on 24 October 2025, and a Victorian premiere and official selection at St Kilda Film Festival on 7 June 2026. These are listed festival events, not evidence of continuing or future screenings.

Can you watch Sweet Oblivion now?
The available sources document festival screenings but do not establish current streaming, retail physical-media availability or future screening dates. For any new screening information, check the filmmakers’ or festival’s current announcements.
