Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is best approached as a politically engaged, hero-centered biopic—not as a neutral account of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s life. Randeep Hooda’s committed lead performance drew notice, but reviewers sharply disagreed about the film’s success and challenged its one-sided treatment of history, particularly its depiction of Gandhi and Savarkar’s contemporaries.
What the film presents
Released theatrically in India on March 22, 2024, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is a Hindi-language biographical drama directed by Hooda, who also plays Savarkar. Ankita Lokhande and Amit Sial are among the listed cast. ZEE5’s synopsis describes a story spanning Savarkar’s revolutionary activity, imprisonment, political ideas, and opposition to Gandhi’s methods. That synopsis tells readers what the film covers; it does not independently verify every event or interpretation shown onscreen. ZEE5’s film page lists the cast, crew, synopsis, theatrical release date, and a streaming premiere of May 28, 2024.

How critics judged Hooda’s performance and direction
Shubhra Gupta’s March 23, 2024 review for The Indian Express rated the film 2 out of 5. She recognized Hooda’s committed performance and his role as director, but argued that the film’s one-sided point of view and repeated belittling of contemporaries, especially Gandhi, make its portrait reductive. Read Gupta’s review in The Indian Express.
The Guardian review, also published March 23, noted a strong central performance while criticizing the film as hagiographic and questioning how it handles Savarkar’s historical record. In particular, the reviewer objected to the film’s treatment of Savarkar’s support for Hitler’s Germany. That is the reviewer’s criticism of the film’s historical framing, not a substitute for a fuller account of the underlying history. Read The Guardian’s review.

Is Swatantrya Veer Savarkar historically accurate?
The cited reviews do not present the film as a neutral or comprehensive historical account. Gupta describes it as a biographical telling from Savarkar’s own point of view and objects to the way it diminishes contemporaries. The Guardian likewise calls its approach hagiographic and raises concerns about its handling of historical details. Those are critics’ assessments of the film; the available sources do not establish a scene-by-scene fact-check or settle every historical dispute raised by the story.
Rank #2
The distinction matters because the film’s own framing is explicit. At the 55th International Film Festival of India in November 2024, Hooda said he had “Took it upon myself to tell the real story of our unsung hero, Veer Savarkar,” according to the Press Information Bureau’s account. “Real story” is Hooda’s stated aim, not an independent finding about the film’s accuracy. Election-period release and political context
The film opened in India in the weeks before the 2024 national election. The Associated Press placed that timing within wider concerns about popular cinema’s political uses and films engaging with Hindu-nationalist politics. It does not establish why the filmmakers chose the release date, so timing alone should not be treated as proof of motive. AP quoted film critic and Bollywood screenwriter Raja Sen saying, “That appears to be fast changing,” and, “The scary part is that these films are being accepted now. It is truly frightening.” His remarks were part of AP’s reporting on the broader climate, not a finding about the intentions behind this particular film. Read the Associated Press report.
