The Swan Draught rooftop sign returned to The Raffles Hotel in Applecross, Perth, after a 20-year absence, with a switch-on scheduled for August 15, 2024. It replaced an Asahi sign and restored a familiar local beer name above the Swan River. The available reports do not establish whether the sign is still installed or illuminated today.
What happened to the Swan Draught sign?
A large Swan Draught sign returned to the roof of The Raffles Hotel in Applecross in August 2024. The West Australian reported that it was due to be switched on August 15, after a hiatus of about 20 years. The report described the installation as 8.3 metres wide by 5.4 metres high and said it was made locally by Inside Edge International and Project Neon. The West Australian’s report covers the return, dimensions and makers.
The sign’s backing plate was designed to help the Swan logo and black swan stand out in daylight as well as at night. The return was presented as both a brand decision and a local heritage moment. A republication by ChroniclesLive says Australian Venue Co., identified there as the hotel’s owner, and Lion, the beer’s distributor in Western Australia, made the decision in partnership. ChroniclesLive’s August 17, 2024 account attributes the description “nostalgic” to venue manager Simone Rea.
How the rooftop sign changed over time
Swan Gold and Swan Draught signs were once familiar features above the Swan River. According to The West Australian, Crown Lager took over the rooftop space roughly two decades before the 2024 return; an Asahi sign was in place immediately before Swan Draught came back. The sequence at the Raffles rooftop was therefore:

Why the return mattered to the hotel and brand
The Raffles is in Applecross, Perth, and the rooftop sign is visible against the Swan River setting. In the ChroniclesLive republication, Lion WA field sales director Danny Connolly called the return “a momentous occasion” that celebrated shared heritage and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the WA community. The same account says Lion reported that nearly 10 million pints of Swan Draught are poured in WA each year and that it is distributed to more than 800 venues across the state. Those are figures attributed to Lion through the 2024 report, not independently verified or audited statistics.
