Rotolo met Dylan in 1961, appears with him on the cover of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, and later told her own story in the memoir A Freewheelin’ Time. The film draws on her life, but it changes her name and dramatizes events.
Who was Suze Rotolo?
Rotolo grew up in Queens and moved to Greenwich Village, where she became part of a lively community of folk music, art, poetry and political activism. She met Dylan in 1961, when she was 17 and he was 20. In a 2008 interview with Fresh Air, she recalled seeing him around the Village folk club Gerde’s Folk City before they spoke at a folk concert at Riverside Church. NPR’s introduction to that interview says the couple were together for about four years.
Rotolo’s life was not simply a supporting chapter in Dylan’s biography. She volunteered at the New York office of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and her interests included art, poetry and music. Her political engagement and creative work belong alongside the story of her relationship with Dylan.
Why does the film call her Sylvie Russo?
A Complete Unknown uses the name Sylvie Russo for a character based on Rotolo. The name change is a useful reminder that the film is a dramatization, not a documentary record. Its main story runs from Dylan’s arrival in New York in 1961 to the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, compressing and shaping events for the screen.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
One important difference concerns Newport: Vanity Fair reports that Rotolo did not attend the 1965 festival, although the film places Sylvie in that period of its story. That scene should not be treated as evidence of Rotolo’s presence. More generally, scenes in the film are best understood as part of a biopic’s interpretation, not as confirmed events in her life.
The photograph on The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan
Rotolo is widely recognized from the cover of Dylan’s 1963 album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, where she walks beside him on a New York street. The image offers an immediate connection to the era, but it cannot stand in for the whole of her life.

In her 2008 Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, Rotolo said the photo session began casually in their small apartment. Photographer Don Hunstein suggested that they go outside and walk. Rotolo described it this way: “It was very casual, completely unplanned, and it was freezing outside.” Her recollection captures an unposed moment that later became an iconic album image.
Rotolo’s account of Greenwich Village and Dylan
Rotolo’s own perspective is available in A Freewheelin’ Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties. She writes about the music and arts community, her relationship with Dylan and the atmosphere of the Village. In the same 2008 interview, she summed up the milieu: “people were coming to the Village to find or lose themselves, and you lived very much in the present.”

The memoir is a useful counterweight to accounts centered on Dylan: it lets readers encounter Rotolo as an artist and participant in the Village scene, as well as a partner whose image became famous. Penguin Random House lists a 384-page ebook published May 13, 2008, and a 384-page paperback published May 12, 2009; those are publisher-listed formats and publication dates, not a guarantee of current retail availability.
