Before Survivor 50 began, Emily Flippen said she probably would not win—but could imagine a route to victory if bigger threats targeted one another while she stayed unnoticed. The season has since concluded: Aubry Bracco won, with Jonathan Young and Joe Hunter as the other finalists.
What Emily Flippen said about winning Survivor 50
In an interview with Dalton Ross for Entertainment Weekly, conducted in Fiji shortly before the season premiere and published February 14, 2026, Flippen was asked why she would win. Her answer was candid: “I’m probably not, to be honest with you. But I wouldn’t be out here if I didn’t think there was a chance.” Read the interview.
She called the scenario she had in mind “a certain amount of chaos.” In her imagined path, the larger threats would focus on eliminating one another, giving her room to “fly under the radar.” She summed it up this way: “So I think if I win Survivor, something crazy has happened, you know what I mean?”
Those were Flippen’s pre-season expectations, not a claim that she had a specific alliance or plan guaranteed to carry her to the end. Her point was that she saw a chance, but believed a win would depend on the game’s biggest players drawing attention away from her.

Why Flippen wanted to return
Flippen finished seventh on Survivor 45. In the interview, she spoke about wanting to apply what she had learned without turning herself into someone else or disappointing viewers who remembered her first season. She identified snap judgments and leaving too little room for nuance as regrets from her earlier game.
“I feel like the lesson that I left people with was that you had to change or pretend to be somebody else in order to do well,” she said. “And that’s not really my experience or the lesson that I want to leave people with.” Her stated aim was to remain herself while making better use of what she had learned.

She also said Survivor 45 changed her perspective on marriage; she later got married after reconsidering assumptions she had held while playing. She saw her profile as lower than that of more prominent returning players, which helped explain why she thought others might target the biggest threats first.
