Spoilers for the September 24, 2025 premiere, including the first vote-out. “Act One of a Horror Film” introduced Survivor 49’s three tribes, sent Kele to the season’s first Tribal Council, and ended with Nicole Mazullo voted out. Parade reporter Mike Bloom’s on-set account adds context the episode did not show; those observations are identified below rather than presented as part of the broadcast edit.
What happened in the Survivor 49 premiere
In “Act One of a Horror Film,” 18 strangers arrived in Fiji and faced a marooning challenge for camping supplies. The season’s three tribes were Hina, Uli, and Kele. Jeff Probst connected their names with qualities for the game: intuition, patience, and courage, respectively. CBS’s episode guide describes the castaways’ chance to compete for $1 million. The opening immunity challenge sent the losing Kele tribe to Tribal Council. Kele voted out Nicole Mazullo, making her the first contestant eliminated from the season. TVLine’s September 24, 2025 recap also identifies Nicole as the first person voted out.
What Parade reported that viewers did not see
The details in this section come from Mike Bloom’s Parade on-set report, based on a visit to the camps on Day 2 and presence at the Day 3 challenge period. They are additional reporting, not scenes shown in the episode.

A fuller mat chat—and a late cast change
Although the broadcast mat chat focused on about five contestants, Bloom reported that nearly everyone had a chance to introduce themselves on the mat. The same report said two people were removed from the cast for pregame talking, and alternates Jason Treul and MC Chukwujekwu joined roughly 12 hours before the opening challenge.
Bloom also noted details from the introductions that help explain the contestants’ personal connections to the show. Rizo Velovic spoke about his Albanian background and recalled seeing Jeff Probst return J.T. Thomas’s tooth during Survivor: Tocantins. Alex Moore told Probst that his high-school Survivor fan club had written to him without receiving a reply.

Small camp moments and early impressions
During the Day 2 camp visit, Savannah Louie asked Rizo what nickname he preferred. “Honestly, I prefer Rizo,” he replied. Nate Moore then asked what “Rizz” meant, according to Bloom’s account.
Bloom also reported that Savannah and Sage Ahrens-Nichols talked while weaving palm fronds. Sage said, “I actually identify as queer,” and described finding the term demisexual representative of their experience.

At Kele, Bloom saw Jeremiah Ing break coconuts on rocks and bring pieces back to campmates. He also observed Kimberly “Annie” Davis resting in the shelter while others were near the water, but allowed that she may have been conserving energy; the observation alone does not establish why she was resting. At Hina, castaways chatted while working with palm fronds, while Matt Williams repeatedly carried firewood and visibly searched trees for an idol.
The challenge took longer than the edit suggested
The televised immunity challenge featured a snake-shaped ball track. Bloom reported that its final stage took nearly 15 minutes in reality, even though the edit made it appear that the tribes got the hang of it quickly. His account describes all three tribes dropping their balls in close succession as the momentum shifted during the sequence.

What happened around Nicole’s vote
Bloom described the Tribal Council set as a 75-foot shipwreck and published voting-booth remarks that were not included in the broadcast. Nicole’s voting-confessional line, as reproduced by Parade, was: “You said my name. And you thought I was gonna be the first one to go…no. Thanks for the shelter. Peace.”
In her final words, Nicole said she had considered playing her Shot in the Dark but chose not to, then called that decision “stupid.” Parade also reported that she later described the vote as a true blindside. Her exit remark, reproduced in the report, was: “Season 49 is going to be amazing.”
