After Shannon is voted out in Survivor 49 episode 6, she offers Sage a hug. Sage declines and offers a handshake instead, saying she wants a hug to be genuine and cannot give one sincerely in that moment. Dalton Ross’s October 30, 2025, recap frames the exchange as a pointed expression of the conflict between the two players.
Why Sage refused Shannon’s hug
As quoted by Dalton Ross in his recap, Sage tells Shannon: “I’m gonna give you a handshake, because I want the hug to be genuine and I don’t think I can give that to you right now. But I look forward to hugging you in the future, okay? Take care.” The gesture is a refusal in the moment, not a declaration that they could never reconcile: Sage explicitly leaves open the possibility of a future hug.
Ross connects Sage’s response to her emphasis on authenticity and her frustration with what she perceived as Shannon’s behavior in the game. His recap characterizes the conflict through that lens, including its own assessment of Shannon; that is the writer’s interpretation of the players’ dynamic, not an objective finding about either contestant’s character.
How the episode’s vote set up the moment
Ross reports that Shannon wanted to target Jawan, while Steven distrusted her. The episode ends with Shannon voted out after a blindside, and Sage’s role in that outcome helps explain why Shannon’s offer of a hug became the episode’s defining post-vote exchange. The recap’s account presents the vote and the personal tension together, rather than treating the handshake as an isolated bit of Tribal Council etiquette.

What the handshake means—and what it does not
The clearest evidence for Sage’s choice is her own explanation as quoted in the recap: she does not feel able to offer Shannon a genuine hug then, so she chooses a handshake and expresses hope for a different interaction in the future. Ross’s broader authenticity framing helps explain why the moment resonated within the episode, but it should remain distinct from what Sage directly says. The handshake communicates a boundary in that moment; by itself, it does not establish what either player felt beyond the exchange or whether they later reconciled.
