The surprise was Maria Gonzalez’s choice to vote for Kenzie, not her former ally Charlie. Her ballot made the result more striking, but it was not alone decisive.
How the finale reached its final three
The official CBS episode guide lists “Friends Going to War” as Season 46, Episode 13, broadcast May 22, 2024 (CBS episode guide). The endgame narrowed the remaining players through two immunity challenges, a vote, and fire-making.
Kenzie and Liz work together; Maria is voted out
In the first finale immunity challenge, Kenzie and Liz cooperated, helping Kenzie secure the win. The group then voted Maria out, ending the game for one of the season’s central players (TVLine’s finale recap).
Ben chooses Charlie, leaving Kenzie to make fire
Ben won the subsequent final immunity challenge and chose Charlie to join him in the final three. Kenzie and Liz faced the fire-making challenge for the remaining spot; Kenzie won and advanced to Final Tribal Council with Ben and Charlie (TVLine).

The final vote—and why Maria’s ballot stood out
The jury voted 5–3–0 for Kenzie over Charlie and Ben, respectively, according to TVLine. Maria voted for Kenzie rather than Charlie, her close ally during the game. That choice drew attention because of their relationship, but the tally shows the outcome was not settled by Maria’s vote alone.
In a TVLine interview published May 23, Kenzie said, “I think everyone was pretty surprised by Maria.” She also said she was surprised by Maria’s choice and described the Final Tribal Council as close, saying she was impressed by the other finalists’ answers.
