Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We will control all that you see and hear.” The original The Outer Limits made that promise at the start of a science-fiction series built around aliens, uncanny technology and human fears. If you want a strong starting point, these ten selections span its two-season, 49-episode run from 1963 to 1965. They are curated favorites, not a definitive ranking—and one pick, “The Inheritors,” is a two-part story, so the list covers eleven installments.

How to choose a first episode
The original series is often compared with The Twilight Zone, but this selection emphasizes stories whose science-fiction premises drive toward bleak, unsettling consequences. The recommendations below move among alien encounters, mind and identity, political fear, strange technology and moral dilemmas. Start with the premise that appeals to you most; the order is not a ranking.
The list is based on an editorial selection published by Gizmodo in 2020, which describes its choices as personal nominations. Viewers’ own essential episodes may differ.

10 essential episodes of the original series
1. “The Architects of Fear” — Season 1, Episode 3
A group of scientists hopes to unite humanity by manufacturing a common enemy: one of their own is transformed to appear alien. The plan’s tragic consequences and Robert Culp’s performance make this a forceful introduction to the series’ darker side.
2. “The Human Factor” — Season 1, Episode 8
At an isolated Greenland outpost, a scientist’s mind-reading research collides with a soldier’s guilt and hallucinations. An earthquake triggers a mental switch, making identity itself part of the episode’s confined, unnerving mystery.
3. “The Zanti Misfits” — Season 1, Episode 14
A secret military operation is waiting for a prison ship from Zanti when two fugitives disrupt the plan. The alien premise becomes a pointed judgment of humanity.
4. “Don’t Open Till Doomsday” — Season 1, Episode 17
A woman has spent her life trying to recover her husband, who vanished at their wedding reception. Her search leads to a destructive alien device and an alternate dimension; Miriam Hopkins anchors the story.

6. “The Bellero Shield” — Season 1, Episode 20
An inventor encounters an alien and its technology, while his ambitious wife urges him to turn the discovery into a weapon. The episode plays like a science-fiction riff on Macbeth, with Martin Landau and Sally Kellerman in central roles.
7. “A Feasibility Study” — Season 1, Episode 29
Residents of an ordinary neighborhood discover that they have been transported to another planet and selected as potential labor. Their desperate response drives a story that pointedly offers no easy closure.
8. “Soldier” — Season 2, Episode 1
A fighter from 1,800 years in the future arrives in 1960s America. A language expert tries to reconnect him with his humanity, but the ending leaves his final choice uncertain. Harlan Ellison adapted the episode from his story “Soldier From Tomorrow.”
Rank #3
9. “Demon With a Glass Hand” — Season 2, Episode 5
Robert Culp plays Trent in a story that brings together time mirrors, biological warfare and the Bradbury Building. Harlan Ellison’s script received multiple awards.
10. “The Inheritors” — Season 2, Episodes 10–11
