Krishna should not be recognised as the recipient of the Sangita Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi Award or project himself as its recipient. The Court said the award ceremony had taken place the previous evening and that the underlying civil suit remained pending before the Madras High Court.
What the Supreme Court ordered
In its order dated 16 December 2024, the Court recorded that the award ceremony had taken place on the evening of 15 December. In paragraph 11, it directed that, pending further proceedings, Krishna “should not be recognized as the recipient” of the named award and restrained him from projecting himself as its recipient. This was an interim direction, not a final ruling on the civil suit. The order noted that the suit was pending adjudication before the Madras High Court.
Which award was covered—and which title was distinct
The direction concerned the Sangita Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi Award: the specific award bearing Subbulakshmi’s name. Court material distinguishes it from the separate Sangita Kalanidhi title. A Madras High Court clarification reproduced in later docket material said the 2024 Sangita Kalanidhi title could be conferred on Krishna without using Subbulakshmi’s name in any form. The two should not be treated as the same legal question. Supreme Court docket material listed on 18 July 2025.

What the order did not decide
The Supreme Court expressly said its interim order should not be understood as a reflection on the Music Academy or the Hindu group, or as adverse comment on Krishna’s stature as a Carnatic musician. The order also described Subbulakshmi as “one of the most distinguished singers” and said her voice continued to bring joy to her fans. That observation was part of the Court’s discussion of Subbulakshmi, not a final determination of the dispute.

- 15 December 2024: The award ceremony took place, according to the Supreme Court’s order.
- 16 December 2024: The Supreme Court issued notice and made the interim direction about recognition as recipient of the named award.
- After the order: The cited docket material includes later procedural records, but does not establish a final disposition of the civil suit. The available record therefore supports describing the direction as interim and the suit as pending at the time of the order—not saying the dispute was finally settled.
A contemporaneous report also described the direction as an interim order. The Indian Express, 16 December 2024.
