Their lasting solution is casework: identify the spirit, discover what anchors it to the living world, and deal with that connection. These are rules of the show’s fictional universe, not real-world paranormal advice.
How the Winchesters approach a haunting
Ghosts are among the recurring threats in a series that also features many other supernatural beings; Penguin Random House’s official companion-series description names ghosts among the creatures Sam and Dean encounter. The brothers’ ghost cases tend to follow an investigative pattern rather than a single weapon-based fix.
- Investigate the report. Establish what is happening and whether the apparent haunting is actually the work of a spirit; the show sometimes reveals that an initial diagnosis is wrong.
- Identify the spirit and its connection. Look for the history or object linking it to the living world. In “Route 666,” the method of dealing with remains fails because they are fused with another object, illustrating why the connection matters.
- Use defensive tools when needed. Salt and iron can interrupt or repel a spirit while the brothers work the case.
- Resolve the haunting. The series often depicts the brothers finding and dealing with a spirit’s remains. This is a recurring pattern, not a universal rule for every ghost or case.
What salt does in the show
Rock salt is portrayed as a deterrent, not a guaranteed way to destroy a ghost. In “Hook Man,” Dean explains that it will slow the spirit rather than kill it. That exchange is reproduced by a fan-maintained episode reference, not an official transcript, so it is best understood as an episode-specific illustration of the show’s convention.
Salt also serves as a boundary: a salt line can offer temporary protection, while rock salt can briefly disperse a spirit. Neither use, by itself, proves that the haunting has been resolved. “Asylum” is an episode example of the brothers salting and burning remains; “Route 666” shows why that approach can fail when the remains’ connection is more complicated.

What iron does—and how it differs from salt
Iron is another recurring physical means of repelling or dispersing spirits. Episode-indexed examples include Sam using an iron poker in “Provenance,” Jo using an iron-bladed knife in “No Exit,” and Dean explaining salt and iron to Sheriff Donna in “Plush.” These examples establish a recurring story convention, not a claim that every spirit responds identically.
| Tool | Depicted use | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Rock salt | Can form a temporary boundary or briefly disperse/deter a spirit; the “Hook Man” exchange describes it as slowing rather than killing one. | That a spirit is destroyed or a haunting ended. |
| Iron | Physical objects such as a poker or blade are used to repel or dissipate spirits. | That iron works against every spirit or every supernatural being. |
Why finding the remains or anchor matters
Temporary defense and a lasting resolution are different stages of a case. The show often links resolution to locating and dealing with remains, but “Route 666” demonstrates that remains may be tied to another object. A hunter who stops at the first apparent answer may miss the connection keeping the haunting active. The series’ examples support this as a useful pattern for understanding its stories, not an exception-free rule.

Official episode and companion-guide references
Warner Bros. Entertainment Japan’s official season-one page provides an entry point to episodes involving a haunting at the Winchester childhood home and a spirit associated with a woman killed years earlier. The page is in Japanese, so its episode descriptions should not be treated as a detailed English-language explanation of the show’s ghost rules: Warner Bros. Entertainment Japan: Season 1.
For a physical fan reference, Penguin Random House lists Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 1 by Nicholas Knight, published by Titan Books. It is a season-one companion rather than a ghost-only guide; the publisher describes interviews, behind-the-scenes material, an episode guide, and coverage of supernatural entities.
