In the two-part premiere of Superman & Lois’s fourth and final season, Doomsday kills Clark at the end of “The End & the Beginning” (4×01). “A World Without” (4×02) follows the family’s grief and their attempt to recover his heart, while Lex Luthor’s threat to Lois and her sons continues. The premiere does not settle whether Clark will return.
Episode 1, “The End & the Beginning”: Doomsday kills Superman
The premiere opens with two crises unfolding at once: Superman is locked in a brutal fight with Luthor’s monster, while Lois, Jordan, and Jonathan race to rescue General Lane from Luthor’s people. Lex has moved to Smallville as part of his plan against Lois, so the fight against Doomsday is only one part of the family’s danger. The CW’s season synopsis establishes those parallel threats.
The confrontation ends with Clark dead. That is the episode’s defining turn: the family’s struggle against Lex continues, but now they must face the loss of Superman as well. The death is a cliffhanger, not a resolution of Clark’s ultimate fate.
Episode 2, “A World Without”: grief and the search for Clark’s heart
The second episode shifts from the battle itself to its aftermath. Lois tells Lana about Clark’s death and Luthor’s schemes, and Lana commits to opposing him. Meanwhile, Jordan and Jonathan each look for a way to get Clark’s heart back, believing Kryptonian technology could make his return possible.

Why Jordan and Jonathan disagree
The brothers do not respond to the loss in the same way, and they clash over what to do next. Their separate plans to recover Clark’s heart give that disagreement a concrete focus: they share the hope of bringing him back, but not a unified approach. The CW’s episode description notes that they butt heads over an important decision; the episode guide describes their separate recovery plans.
What the ending means
Does Superman die in the premiere?
Yes. Clark dies at the end of the Doomsday fight in episode 1. Episode 2 treats that loss as real and consequential for the family; it does not reveal whether the attempt to recover his heart will succeed. In an October 7, 2024 interview with TV Insider, showrunner Brent Fletcher said the creators wanted viewers to feel the loss and wanted any return to be earned rather than an instant fix.
What happens to Clark’s heart?
Jordan and Jonathan pursue its recovery as a possible route to bringing Clark back. The premiere episodes establish the attempt and the brothers’ disagreement, but do not settle its outcome.
Why is Lex still a threat?
Lex remains in Smallville and continues targeting Lois. Fletcher also said Lex sees Jordan as another target after learning his identity. With Clark gone, the family must grieve while still protecting one another from Luthor’s plans.

- Lois Lane and Clark Kent saved the best for last. In their final season, they finally get married. There are a few roadblocks along the highway to marital bliss: a worlds-at-war battle with Lord Nor; an adventure-packed encounter with the Wedding Destroyer, who believes folks are better dead than wed; and even wedding-night interruptus compliments of time-traveling H.G. Wells. But before or after
Is this a direct retelling of “The Death of Superman”?
The premiere draws on the broad idea of the Death of Superman storyline, but the creators did not describe it as a page-for-page adaptation. Showrunner Todd Helbing told TV Insider that the team takes inspiration from iconic comic runs and gives the story a Superman & Lois spin. He said the decision to kill Superman was settled as the show entered its final ten episodes.
