Spoilers for the series finale, “It Went by So Fast.” In the final episode of Superman & Lois, the Kents stop Lex Luthor’s last threat to Smallville, then the story jumps ahead through Clark and Lois’s remaining years. Clark eventually dies as an old man—not because the finale reverses his resurrection, but because the human heart that brought him back also makes him mortal. Lois dies first, and the two reunite after death.
“It Went by So Fast” is season 4, episode 10 and the series finale. It originally aired December 2, 2024, on The CW; the network lists it as directed by Gregory Smith and written by Brent Fletcher and Todd Helbing. The CW’s episode listing identifies the episode and its original broadcast details.
How does the finale resolve the fight with Lex Luthor?
The Kents face Luthor’s final move against Smallville. The immediate conflict ends with Superman saving the day from Luthor and Doomsday, bringing the show’s last major threat to a close. The episode then shifts from the danger facing the town to the lives Clark and Lois build with their family and community. What happens after the battle?
Lana Lang and John Henry Irons marry at the Kent Farm. Clark, Lois, Jonathan, Jordan, and their Smallville circle are there, making the wedding a community milestone as well as a family celebration.

Afterward, the episode makes a major time jump. Clark narrates the decades that follow, and the finale traces the Kents’ lives rather than ending immediately after the defeat of the villain.
Why does Clark age and eventually die?
Clark’s death in the finale is tied to the earlier battle with Doomsday. His heart stopped, and he returned to life with a human heart from Lois’s father, General Sam Lane. That heart keeps him alive, but it also means he gradually loses his powers and ages. His eventual death is the end of a long human lifespan, not another temporary death followed by a new resurrection.

Clark and Lois use their public influence after his identity as Superman is revealed to support good causes and open hospitals. Jonathan and Jordan grow up, help others, marry, and have children. The family’s story continues across generations while Clark grows old.
Does Lois die before Clark?
Yes. Lois’s cancer returns late in her life, and she dies before Clark. He lives on into old age, surrounded by family, before he too dies. The finale closes with Clark and Lois reunited after death. What does the ending mean?
The finale turns the familiar idea of the “death of Superman” into the story of what happens after he survives. Clark’s borrowed human heart gives him more life with Lois and their family, but that life has an end. Instead of leaving their future open for another crisis or resurrection, the episode carries Clark and Lois through their final years and gives their relationship a concluding moment.
The reunion after death offers emotional closure to the couple’s story, while their sons and grandchildren carry forward the family’s work of helping people. That reading is supported by the episode’s focus on a full life together and by the creators’ explanation that they wanted to close the characters’ story. How is the finale connected to The Death of Superman?
The showrunners connected the ending to the Death of Superman storyline while using it to tell a different kind of conclusion: not only a hero’s death and return, but the rest of Clark and Lois’s lives. In the same interview, Helbing described the challenge of creating an ending that would stay with viewers. In a separate interview, he said, “Superman’s existed for 85 years and the fans are so astute.” That figure is Helbing’s statement in a 2024 interview, not an independently verified statistic. The comic is related reading, not a required tie-in to understand the episode. The finale’s emotional resolution rests on the events shown onscreen: Clark and Lois reach the end of their lives, and their family continues beyond them.
