David Corenswet plays Superman in James Gunn’s Superman (2025); Christopher Reeve is the clearest earlier comparison as Superman in the 1978 film. Rachel Brosnahan takes on Lois Lane, a role strongly associated with Margot Kidder in the Reeve-era films. These are comparisons between separate versions of the characters—not a continuation of the 1978 story.
Who played Superman before David Corenswet?
Christopher Reeve played Superman in the 1978 film Superman, making him the central comparison for Corenswet’s portrayal. DC lists Corenswet as playing both Superman and Clark Kent in the 2025 film. The two actors take on the same iconic character in films made for different eras and different continuities, so the comparison is about performers and portrayals, not a shared storyline.

“Original” needs a little context here. George Reeves played Superman in Superman and the Mole Men (1951), before Reeve’s 1978 film. Reeve is the original star for the article’s main comparison because the focus is the best-known 1978 film, not the first screen appearance of Superman. DC’s history guide distinguishes the George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill versions rather than presenting them as one continuous portrayal. DC’s guide to Superman’s live-action films describes the Reeve films as the Donnerverse and Corenswet’s film as part of the new DC Universe.
Who played Lois Lane before Rachel Brosnahan?
Margot Kidder is the salient earlier Lois Lane comparison for Brosnahan. Brosnahan plays Lois in the 2025 film, while Kidder’s Lois is closely associated with the Reeve-era films. The pairing puts two performers’ interpretations of the same character side by side, but it does not make their films part of the same continuity.

Who is in the 2025 Superman cast?
DC identifies Superman (2025) as a DC Studios feature written and directed by James Gunn. Its official cast listing confirms these principal roles:
| 2025 performer | Role | Earlier comparison in this article |
|---|---|---|
| David Corenswet | Superman/Clark Kent | Christopher Reeve as Superman in Superman (1978) |
| Rachel Brosnahan | Lois Lane | Margot Kidder as Lois Lane in the Reeve-era films |
| Nicholas Hoult | Lex Luthor | No earlier actor-role pairing is included here |
The supporting cast listed by DC includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell. The official 2025 cast page does not provide role assignments for every supporting performer, so their names alone are not enough to establish comparisons with earlier actors.
What did David Corenswet say about taking on Superman?
At CinemaCon, Corenswet described the role as “a great honor” because Superman is so widely recognized, even by people who have not seen a film or read a comic. He said he hoped to “illuminate something new about the character, or even just bring the beloved character to a new audience,” according to the Associated Press.
When did Superman (2025) come out?
DC gives July 11, 2025, as the U.S. theatrical and IMAX opening date; its listed international release began July 9, 2025. These dates refer to the film’s original theatrical release, not its current availability on a streaming service.
