The first extended teaser for Supergirl presents Kara Zor-El as a rough-edged counterpoint to her cousin Superman: irreverent, guarded and shaped by loss rather than instinctively hopeful. That contrast is the point, not a verdict that one hero is better than the other.
What makes Kara different from Superman?
The teaser frames Kara as less conventionally earnest than Clark Kent. DC’s official commentary describes her as hard-partying and irreverent, and points to a toast to her 23rd birthday and an opening gag involving Krypto and the Daily Planet (DC’s teaser commentary).
That lighter, unruly surface sits beside a harsher history. Kara has experienced Krypton’s destruction and the loss of what she loved. In the teaser analysis, she contrasts Clark’s tendency to see good in everyone with her own claim that she sees the truth (Ars Technica’s analysis). The result is a hero whose confidence and vulnerability can coexist with bitterness and imperfect choices.
At a media briefing, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn put the distinction this way: “This is a story-based medium; we want stories to be in theaters that are cool and different from each other.” He added: “And this movie is not exactly just a female clone of Superman. It’s its own thing entirely. And with a character who’s equally worthy of this treatment.” (Ars Technica)

How the film approaches Kara’s past
The film’s origin-story perspective gives the character’s flaws context rather than treating her as a simple gender-swapped version of Superman. In a DC interview, Milly Alcock said: “We get to see [Kara’s] origin story, so we get to see all the trauma that she’s been through, and all the set of very particular unfortunate circumstances that she’s been given.” (DC interview)
Screenwriter Ana Nogueira highlighted another way the story makes Kara’s vulnerability visible: “We catch her off planet, which is really cool. We catch her under a red sun, which is a very cool way to see Supergirl or Superman—to just see them being fully human.” (DC interview)
