DC’s first teaser for Supergirl presents Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El as a more cynical, irreverent contrast to her cousin Clark, then points toward an interstellar journey tied to vengeance and justice. The film adapts the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but the teaser offers glimpses—not confirmation of every plot detail or how closely the finished film follows the comic.
What the first Supergirl teaser shows
The footage introduces a Kara who does not share Clark Kent’s sunny outlook. DC’s December 2025 coverage describes her as a harder, more irreverent counterpart. A birthday toast and her reluctant involvement in Ruthye’s quest sketch the film’s tone and central relationship without spelling out the entire story.

The teaser also offers glimpses of an intergalactic setting, Kara alongside Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Jason Momoa as Lobo. Some images invite interpretation rather than provide definitive answers: DC’s own breakdown raises questions about certain identities and plot implications. It is safer to say the footage appears to show particular characters or suggests a connection than to treat every inference as confirmed story.
DC later released an official full trailer as a separate marketing release. It is not the first teaser discussed here.

What is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow about?
The film’s official synopsis says Kara reluctantly joins an unlikely companion on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice after a ruthless adversary strikes too close to home. DC identifies the companion as Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by Eve Ridley, and the target of Ruthye’s vengeance as Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.
That premise echoes the comic’s setup: Ruthye seeks vengeance after Krem murders her father, and Kara becomes involved in her journey. The teaser’s birthday toast refers to Kara turning 23; in the comic, she celebrates her 21st birthday. It is a clear adaptation difference, but not evidence that every other comic event is changed—or retained—unchanged.

How the teaser relates to the comic
Supergirl is the movie’s title. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is the 2021 comic series by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely on which the film is based. DC describes it as an eight-issue limited series.
DC’s commentary characterizes the comic’s opening as a space western in the tradition of True Grit, with the story later taking on a pirate-story quality. The teaser shows Kara fighting space goons, but DC’s breakdown poses rather than resolves whether they are the Brigands. Treat that identification as a possibility, not a confirmed fact.

The adaptation also brings in Lobo, whom DC notes is not a character in the Woman of Tomorrow comic. Other images discussed in DC’s breakdown, including Krypto and what may be Kara grieving, are clues viewers can consider, not a complete, verified account of the film’s plot.
For readers curious about the source, the natural companion is the comic itself: read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film and the source share a foundation, but a teaser cannot establish which scenes, character beats, or story turns made it into the finished adaptation.

Who is in the Supergirl movie?
Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl/Kara Zor-El. Craig Gillespie directs, and Ana Nogueira wrote the screenplay. DC’s official cast list also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa.
Momoa plays Lobo, an addition to the film’s cast who is absent from the source comic. His appearance is one of the clearest signs that the adaptation is not simply a page-by-page transfer of King and Evely’s story.

Why DC says it made the film
In a December 11, 2025 interview, DC.com quoted DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn on the decision to proceed: “The reasons are various, but the main one is when Ana Nogueira wrote the Woman of Tomorrow script, it was fantastic,” shares Gunn, when asked why DC Studios is following up Superman with a movie starring his cousin. “And at DC Studios, we care most about the writing. So, we just instantly greenlit the movie.” These are studio comments about the project’s development, not independent critical assessments of the finished film.
When did Supergirl come out?
Supergirl opened internationally on June 24, 2026, followed by its official North American theatrical and IMAX release on June 26, 2026. Those dates have passed: as of October 8, 2026, the film is released. Current streaming availability and regional viewing options are not established here.
Optional merchandise for fans
DC’s May 2026 announcement covered licensed film-related products across collectibles, apparel, accessories, and publishing, including a Mattel Barbie Signature DC Supergirl Doll. It named partners and retailers including Funko, McFarlane Toys, Mattel, Reebok, Crocs, and BoxLunch. That announcement establishes product categories and partners, not present-day stock or where a particular item can currently be purchased.
