Benoist did not give one definitive reason for choosing the role; in interviews, she described how different Sadie is from Kara Danvers and how the part deepened her appreciation for political reporters.
How Sadie McCarthy differs from Kara Danvers
In a March 11, 2024 interview with TVLine, Benoist said the characters “could not be more different.” Kara’s journalism in Supergirl, she said, “served a very different purpose”; the show “really only skimmed the surface of journalism and what it looks like.”
Their shared ground is a concern for truth and a desire to fight for what is right. But Benoist described Sadie as “a journalist with a capital J,” adding, “It is what she lives, eats and breathes. It is her whole life.” That is Benoist’s description of the characters: Sadie’s professional identity is at the center of her story in a way Kara’s journalism was not.
What drew Benoist to the project after Supergirl
The Associated Press reported on March 12, 2024, that Benoist was first approached about The Girls on the Bus after wrapping her six-season stint as Supergirl. She was taking a break with her son when she received the call. Benoist said she had considered herself an informed citizen, but knew little about political journalism before taking on the role.

She told the AP that learning about the work gave her greater respect for reporters covering campaigns and changed how she processed the news. “I look at my news so differently now, and I really loved learning about it,” she said. Her comments describe what she gained from the experience; they do not establish a single private motive for accepting the part.
How Benoist prepared to play a campaign reporter
According to the AP, co-creator Amy Chozick recommended two works as preparation: Alexandra Pelosi’s documentary Journeys with George, which follows a reporter embedded with George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign, and Richard Ben Cramer’s book What It Takes: The Way to the White House. Benoist said she “went through withdrawal” when she finished Cramer’s book. She also received a hard copy of The New York Times each day.

The title and campaign-trail premise evoke Timothy Crouse’s The Boys on the Bus, a classic account of reporters covering the 1972 presidential campaign. That is useful context for the show’s subject, not evidence of an official tie-in. The AP reported Chozick’s recommendation of What It Takes to Benoist; neither book is established as an official series tie-in.
What the series says about campaign journalism
Warner Bros. Discovery’s official series description centers on Sadie McCarthy, who romanticizes an earlier era of campaign reporting and takes a chance to cover a presidential candidate for a paper of record. The AP describes the ensemble of four journalists as a way to stage disagreements over ethics, ideology, and the forms journalism takes.

- Grace (Carla Gugino) is a veteran print reporter.
- Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore) is a Black on-air reporter at a conservative cable outlet.
- Lola (Natasha Behnam) is a younger journalist working in newer digital formats.
Their contrasting approaches create arguments over whether print, video, or digital media best serves the work, while the series also emphasizes the reporters’ relationships. Benoist told the AP, “Women supporting each other goes so much further than being pitted against each other.” The ensemble, then, puts professional and generational differences alongside the question of how women in a competitive field relate to one another.

For Benoist, Sadie was a move from a superhero whose journalism was one part of a much larger story to a character whose life revolves around reporting. Her account of the role focuses on that contrast and on what she learned about campaign coverage—not on a single stated reason for taking the job.
