Superboys of Malegaon is a drama inspired by real events, not a documentary. Its most inviting idea is also its simplest: cinema can be something a community makes together, not just something it watches. Reema Kagti’s film follows amateur filmmaker Nasir Shaikh and the friends he brings together to make a movie for the people of Malegaon. That premise gives this affectionate portrait of local filmmaking its heart—and a clear question to consider: can a shared dream carry a story as compellingly as an individual one?
A community project, not a lone-genius story
Nasir’s ambition is rooted in Malegaon. Bollywood films offer an escape from daily struggles in the town, and he wants to turn that familiar pleasure into a creative project made locally and for local audiences. His friends are not simply supporting characters orbiting an aspiring director: the film’s premise makes their participation essential to the undertaking.
That collective focus is what gives Superboys of Malegaon a natural emotional center. The filmmaking project can hold friendship, aspiration, and practical resourcefulness in the same frame. It also opens the door to a richer portrait of cinema-going: films matter not only as finished works, but as shared experiences that can prompt people to make something of their own.
The official synopsis calls the friends “ragtag” and describes their project as bringing fresh life to the town. That is studio language, not a verdict the film earns automatically. The more persuasive measure is whether Malegaon feels like a lived community, with its own ties and rhythms, rather than a convenient symbol for small-town hardship. The premise offers the film the chance to make that distinction; its success depends on the people and relationships it puts on screen.

Affection for cinema, grounded in friendship
A film about making films can easily become a celebration of movie magic in the abstract. The more interesting possibility here is that the love of cinema grows out of the group’s shared effort: one person’s idea becomes a reason for friends to plan, collaborate, and keep going together. That makes the project both the story’s subject and its dramatic engine.
It is also where the film’s balance matters most. Malegaon’s everyday difficulties give the dream context, while humor and uplift can keep the story from treating those struggles as its only defining feature. For the warmth to feel earned, the friendships need to carry real weight; otherwise, the cinematic dream risks becoming a tidy answer to problems the film has only briefly acknowledged.

That tension is central to the film’s appeal as a tribute. It does not need to claim that making a movie resolves daily hardship. The more human promise in its premise is that creativity can give people a shared purpose and a way to see their town differently.
The ensemble and the film’s context
Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora lead the cast; the Prime Video listing also names Manjiri Pupala and Muskkaan Jaferi. A story built around a group depends on more than one central performance: the ensemble must make the undertaking feel genuinely shared. Reema Kagti directs, and Varun Grover wrote the screenplay. The producers are Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Kagti.

The film is based on Nasir Shaikh’s life and inspired by events in Malegaon, Maharashtra. It should be approached as a dramatized story, not as a documentary record. Its festival history adds context but does not settle its artistic merits: the film screened at TIFF, the 68th BFI London Film Festival, Palm Springs, and the Red Sea International Film Festival. The Palm Springs International Film Festival listing records a 2025 Young Cineastes Special Mention; that recognition is worth noting without treating it as evidence of a universal critical consensus.
