Across several intersecting storylines, an unfaithful wife, an estranged father, a priest and an angry boy face unexpected crises over the course of one fateful day. Vijay Sethupathi plays Shilpa, the estranged parent at the centre of one of the film’s threads.
What is Super Deluxe about?
The film brings together characters whose separate troubles begin to overlap. Its central situations include a woman confronting the consequences of an affair, a parent returning to family life after an estrangement, and a priest and an angry boy caught up in their own predicaments. The story is built around these converging crises rather than a single protagonist’s journey; the film’s catalogue synopsis offers a brief, spoiler-light outline on Apple TV India.
That setup is best approached without expecting a conventional, linear drama. The film withholds some context while its characters are already in trouble, then lets their situations and connections become clearer as events unfold.
How the film tells its story
In an April 14, 2019 interview with The Indian Express, Kumararaja described Super Deluxe as having multiple story tracks and said he tends to begin stories at climactic moments. Rather than first explaining a couple’s history and relationship breakdown, he starts with Vaembu calling her former lover, allowing viewers to learn about the characters as the drama develops. His account of that approach appears in the interview with Alaka Sahani.

The result is a film that asks the viewer to assemble context as the threads develop. Kumararaja also described the film as a tribute to cinema, citing Star Wars and songs by Bappi Lahiri and Ilaiyaraaja as influences. Those are examples he named, not a complete guide to every reference in the film.

Though Sethupathi is a major draw, the film is an ensemble, with multiple characters and plotlines sharing its attention. The full cast and role listings appear in Apple TV India’s catalogue entry.
How long is Super Deluxe?
Plan for about 176 minutes. Listings vary slightly by source and edition: Apple TV India gives 2 hours 56 minutes, the British Board of Film Classification records a 175-minute-35-second cinema version, and the Directorate of Film Festivals’ 67th National Film Awards catalogue lists 177 minutes. These figures describe the respective catalogue or edition, rather than a single universal runtime.
Is it suitable for children?
Ratings depend on territory and classification system. Apple’s India listing gives the film an A rating and flags language and sexual content. For the UK cinema version, the BBFC lists very strong language and strong sexual threat; its detailed advice describes a police officer blackmailing a woman and threatening sexual coercion. Check the classification for the version available where you live rather than treating one country’s rating as universal.
What recognition did the film receive?
The 67th National Film Awards catalogue names Super Deluxe for Best Supporting Actor and identifies Vijay Sethupathi as the winner. The Directorate of Film Festivals’ official 67th National Film Awards catalogue records the award; the BBFC’s record identifies the film’s cinema version as released in 2019.
