Sunspring is a short science-fiction film whose screenplay was generated by Benjamin, an AI system created by researcher Ross Goodwin. Director Oscar Sharp and a human cast turned Benjamin’s strange, fragmented dialogue into a story that can feel both funny and unsettling. The film was made for Sci-Fi London’s 48-Hour Film Challenge and first appeared online on Ars Technica on June 9, 2016.
What happens in Sunspring?
The film follows three characters—H, H2, and C—in a hazy future that seems to involve a space-station-like setting. Ars Technica describes it as a romance-and-murder story, but the generated script does not clearly establish that plot. Its meaning comes partly from how the performers deliver lines and how viewers connect them.
Thomas Middleditch plays H, Elisabeth Gray plays H2, and Humphrey Ker plays C. Their performances give shape to Benjamin’s unusual dialogue: tone, movement, pauses, and facial expressions make lines that might otherwise seem nonsensical play like parts of a story.
How was the screenplay generated?
Benjamin was an LSTM (long short-term memory) recurrent neural network. Goodwin trained it on dozens of science-fiction screenplays he found online, mostly films from the 1980s and 1990s. The system learned patterns in the text and screenplay format, then generated sequences of character dialogue and stage directions. Ars contrasted the approach with Markov chains, noting that an LSTM can generate longer sequences.
#1 Best Overall
This describes Benjamin as it was used for Sunspring, not AI writing systems generally. The available scripts shaped what it could produce: Goodwin said much of the material he could find was television writing, including Star Trek, Stargate SG-1, and Futurama. The corpus was not a balanced or representative sample of science fiction.
Why are the characters named H, H2, and C?
Goodwin replaced character names in the training scripts with single letters because proper names were difficult for the system. Benjamin’s original script apparently used H for two characters; Sharp relabeled one as H2 to make the roles clearer.

Where does the music come from?
The film includes a pop-song interlude composed by Benjamin after Goodwin trained it on a separate corpus of 30,000 pop songs, according to Ars Technica’s 2016 report.
What did the filmmakers contribute?
Benjamin generated the script, but it did not make the film by itself. Sharp selected and assigned the roles, and the actors interpreted the text through performance. Those human choices help explain why the same script can suggest a coherent relationship or dramatic situation even when the words do not specify one.

Sharp said the actors readily read the material as a love triangle, although he did not think that interpretation was inherent in the text. He also described one staging choice with the line, “We copped out by making it a dream sequence.” The film is therefore an example of how a screenplay’s meaning can come from both its words and the people who stage and interpret them.
Was Sunspring successful in the contest?
Ars reported that the film reached the top ten out of hundreds of entries in Sci-Fi London’s 48-Hour Film Challenge. The report also recounts the filmmakers’ claim that contestants used bots to vote and that Sharp and Goodwin responded by having Benjamin vote 36,000 times per hour in the contest’s final hours. That figure is Sharp’s account, not an independently verified contest tally. Science-fiction author and judge Pat Cadigan joked, “I’ll give them top marks if they promise never to do this again.”

Who authored the film: Benjamin or the humans?
Sharp and Goodwin described Benjamin as occupying an uncertain space between tool and co-author. The system generated text based on patterns in human-written material, while people chose the roles, performed the lines, and shaped how the result appeared on screen. Their account does not settle a general question about AI authorship; it shows why Sunspring resists a simple answer.
The distinction matters when interpreting the film. Benjamin supplied language and screenplay structure, but the apparent romance, tension, and humor depend substantially on human performance and audience inference. Its oddness is not just a property of the generated words; it is also what happens when actors and viewers try to make those words mean something.
