Suzanne Collins’s prequel shifts the interest from whether he survives to how a teenager from District 12 faces a rigged spectacle, a larger field of tributes and a Capitol intent on controlling the story.
What is Sunrise on the Reaping about?
The novel begins on the reaping day of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, twenty-four years before The Hunger Games. This is the Second Quarter Quell, a special edition in which twice as many tributes are taken from their homes. Haymitch is selected in District 12 and sent to the Capitol alongside three other tributes from his district.
Scholastic’s synopsis frames Haymitch as a young person who understands he has been set up to fail, yet retains an impulse to fight. That premise gives the book a different tension from a story built around an unknown victor: readers know Haymitch will survive the arena, but not the choices, relationships and costs that shape that outcome.
Does knowing Haymitch’s fate spoil the story?
It changes the suspense rather than eliminating it. Haymitch becomes a victor, and readers already know from the series that President Snow kills his loved ones. Collins has acknowledged those known endpoints. The dramatic question is how the events lead there and what the victory means for the person Haymitch becomes.

That foreknowledge can make moments of hope feel precarious: the reader sees the distance between the teenager in the arena and the guarded, sardonic mentor familiar from Katniss’s story. The prequel also has room to reveal how familiar facts about the Second Quarter Quell look from inside Haymitch’s experience. Avoiding additional plot specifics preserves the discoveries that belong to a first read.
How does the younger Haymitch’s perspective shape the book?
Collins considered telling the story through an older Haymitch looking back, then chose to keep the point of view with the younger character. In a March 18, 2025 interview with Scholastic’s David Levithan, she said, “I played around with it both ways, but I found that younger Haymitch speaks directly to the YA audience the best. An older person reflecting back on their youth or shifting into a child’s perspective is harder to pull off.”

That choice lets the novel present Haymitch as more than the bitter adult viewers remember. Collins described the younger version as having a greater capacity for hope, love and joy than Coriolanus Snow or Katniss Everdeen. She also connected his voice to the Seam and to Lenore Dove’s Covey influence, while noting that desperation and years of Capitol television erode its musicality. The contrast gives the prequel a way to explore loss without treating the older Haymitch’s cynicism as his only defining trait.
What does the Quarter Quell add to the series?
A larger arena changes the social math
Twice the usual number of tributes means more people to assess, more potential alliances and more reasons to distrust a promise. The expanded field is not merely a bigger body count: it heightens the difficulty of deciding whom to help, avoid or believe when survival depends on information as much as strength.

The Games turn people into a public narrative
Collins has said the novel was inspired in part by David Hume’s idea of “the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.” She also identified propaganda and control of the narrative as central concerns, describing the question “Real or not real?” as increasingly pressing. In Panem, the Capitol’s broadcast is not a neutral account of the Games; it is part of the machinery that shapes what people see, what they fear and what they accept.
This emphasis connects the prequel to the series’ wider interest in spectacle and political power. The arena tests tributes physically, but the broadcast also makes their actions available for interpretation and manipulation. The core question is how much agency anyone can exercise when the authorities control both the rules and the public image of resistance.

How does the book connect with the earlier novels?
Haymitch’s story offers a new point of entry into a character whose later role is already familiar. Rather than replacing what readers know, it invites them to reconsider the distance between the young tribute and the mentor who guides Katniss and Peeta. The prequel’s strongest series-level promise is that it can make past details feel newly charged by showing the person and political system behind them.
Collins has said the series’ three-part structure, with an equal number of chapters in each part, grew from her background in playwriting and became a template for her novels. That design lends itself to a clear progression from the reaping toward the Games and their consequences. Whether it creates taut momentum or a more measured rhythm is a matter of the individual reading; the formal pattern itself is part of the series’ continuing architecture.

Which editions are available?
Scholastic lists the hardcover (ISBN 978-1-5461-7146-1), ebook (978-1-5461-7147-8), audio download (978-1-5461-7149-2), library audio download (978-1-5461-7150-8) and audio CD (978-1-5461-7148-5). The audiobook is narrated by Jefferson White.
In a January 22, 2026 announcement, Scholastic scheduled the US and Canada trade paperback (ISBN 978-1-546-17160-7) for August 4, 2026, and the movie tie-in paperback (ISBN 979-8-225-04447-3) and five-book paperback boxed set (ISBN 979-8-225-04444-2) for September 1, 2026. Because those announced dates have passed, check current publisher or retailer listings for availability and prices.
How widely has the novel sold?
Scholastic reported more than 1.5 million World English copies sold in the first week across the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 2025, including more than 1.2 million in the United States. The publisher also reported a World English first printing of 2.5 million copies. In 2026, Scholastic said sales since publication had exceeded 4.4 million World English copies, including more than 3.3 million in the United States. These are publisher-reported figures, not independently audited totals.
Will there be a film adaptation?
Lionsgate announced a film adaptation in June 2024 and set a North American theatrical release date of November 20, 2026. Scholastic’s January 2026 announcement lists Francis Lawrence as director and Billy Ray as screenplay adapter, with Joseph Zada, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning and Ralph Fiennes among the cast. The release date and production details can change.
