Drifter is an independent drift-racing film written, directed, and led by Sung Kang—not an established Initial D adaptation or a Fast & Furious sequel. Its Toyota AE86 provides the Initial D connection, while Kang has said the community spirit behind Fast & Furious helped inspire the project.
What is Drifter about?
The story follows Tree, a lonely circuit custodian who gets the chance to compete after time away from racing. Kang described the film’s premise in a September 2026 Reddit AMA as: “A lonely custodian discovers purpose and community when he enters the world of competitive drift racing.”
Kang wrote, directed, and stars in the independent feature, and said in the AMA that he co-wrote it. Reporting also describes real circuits and drift-community participants in the film.
Why does it bring Initial D to mind?
The link is the car: Tree’s reported ride, Lola, is a Toyota AE86, a model strongly associated with Initial D. That makes the comparison an understandable visual shorthand, but it does not establish a story connection. The available reporting does not identify Drifter as an adaptation of Initial D.

The Drive noted that an older live-action Initial D framing had been rumored, but the reporting cited here does not confirm that premise for Drifter. The film’s reported plot instead centers on a custodian entering competitive drifting.
How Fast & Furious connects to the film
Kang is known for playing Han in the Fast & Furious films, but Drifter is not established as an installment in that series. The connection Kang has described is creative rather than a sequel relationship: he said he wanted to honor the franchise’s sense of community in his new film.

What is known about Drifter’s release?
In September 2026, Kang said in his Reddit AMA that Drifter was having its world premiere at TIFF. That statement establishes a premiere, not a wider theatrical or streaming release date. A distributor and physical home-video date are not established by the sources cited here, so availability beyond the premiere remains unconfirmed.

Earlier, a June 2026 Sport Auto report said the official site targeted a 2026 release and that no major distributor had been announced at that time. The newer premiere statement updates the film’s status but does not, by itself, confirm when or where audiences elsewhere can watch it.
