In a 2021 interview, Rao explained that she wrote its lyrics to a melody Dhruv Ghanekar had composed about 11 years earlier. The track also brought together percussion by Dharavi Rocks and a Hindi rap by Balaji Devendra, known as Crazy B.
What is “Vaada Karo” about?
Rao linked the song’s impetus to thinking about the world being left for children. In an interview with Scroll, published June 9, 2021, she described writing lyrics for Ghanekar’s melody, which had been composed about 11 years earlier. The song asks listeners to consider the environmental consequences of their actions.
Speaking to The Indian Express on June 16, 2021, Rao said she hoped people would recognize those effects and contribute to a greener, cleaner world. As she put it in a Rolling Stone India feature published July 4, 2021: “The essence of the song is that this is actually our own individual problem but ultimately affects somebody or someone in some corner of the earth.”
How the song came together
A long wait for the right words
Ghanekar’s melody came first; Rao wrote the lyrics years later, while pregnant, according to Scroll. The resulting 2021 arrangement paired her vocals with Dharavi Rocks percussion and Crazy B’s Hindi rap. Rolling Stone India reported that the video premiered on May 20, 2021.

A video intended to raise funds
Scroll reported that the video was intended as a fundraiser for ACORN Foundation, which works with residents of Mumbai’s Dharavi area. Rao had worked with the foundation for years, the publication said. The reported fundraising intention does not establish how much money, if any, the video raised.
The song’s release coincided with cyclones affecting India’s western and eastern coasts, a timely connection noted by Scroll—not a release strategy attributed to Rao.

From “Paree Hoon Main” to independent pop
“Paree Hoon Main” appeared on Rao’s 1991 album Dhuan and became her signature song. The Indian Express also dates the track’s release to 1991. In Scroll’s account of Rao’s early career, she got a break on the television program Pop Time in 1989, followed by her debut album, Suneeta Senorita. The interview identifies Lesle Lewis as the composer of “Paree Hoon Main” and Ram Madhvani as director of its video.
Rao resisted framing her renewed visibility as a “comeback,” telling The Indian Express she had remained active off-screen and connected to music. Her description of her identity is just as direct: “To be called a popstar for me is the ultimate compliment,” she told Scroll.

Why “Vaada Karo” fits her wider career
“Vaada Karo” connects a contemporary environmental message with the independent-pop career that made Rao widely known. Its path—from a melody composed years earlier to lyrics written by Rao and a collaborative arrangement—also shows how a song can acquire new meaning over time. The interviews frame it not as a return to an old hit, but as a continuation of an artist’s work and public voice.
