Sunday Suspense is a Bengali storytelling programme built around literary readings, expressive performances and designed sound. A filmmaker quoted in 2018 called it a “Netflix for books”—a vivid description of its appeal, not a measured claim that it outperforms Netflix. Its story is instead about how a radio-born format brought Bengali fiction to listeners through both broadcast and online distribution.
What is Sunday Suspense?
Sunday Suspense is a Bengali radio storytelling show associated with Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM in Kolkata. Scroll’s December 2018 feature reported that it began in 2009 with short stories by Satyajit Ray. The programme’s conceiver, Indrani Chakrabarti, described its central approach simply: “We take a Bengali classic and read it from cover to cover.”
That distinction matters: the format is not merely a plot summary or discussion of a book. It presents a story through spoken performance, supported by sound design. Scroll reported that the show had produced close to 500 episodes by 2018; that is a historical figure, not a current catalogue count. The same article reported eight Excellence in Radio Awards and three consecutive wins for the New York International Radio Festival’s best audio book from India, without specifying award years in the cited passage.
How voice and sound turn reading into a scene
The programme’s effect depends on what listeners hear as much as on the words themselves. Scroll’s account highlights performer Mir Afsar Ali’s character voices and soundscape designer Richard Debnath’s work. In its example of Ray’s “Khagam,” knocks and hissing help establish the story’s tense atmosphere. These are details from the feature’s description of the production, not measurements of how listeners respond.

Chakrabarti said, “Voice modulations and foley sounds are added to create the theatre of the mind experience.” The phrase captures the format: performers suggest distinct characters and reactions, while effects evoke a setting without showing it. In Zoom’s December 2025 report, actor Prosenjit Chatterjee described the different demands of audio performance: “While dubbing, we can get references from our co-actors, but here I had to imagine Robin Hood and his reactions, and hence this medium was different.”
What kinds of stories does it tell?
The early catalogue, as described by Scroll in 2018, grew out of Bengali classics, often in horror and crime, and expanded to translated literature and longer serialised works. Its examples show a format that could move between a self-contained short story, a multi-day adaptation and newer material.

- Bengali classics: The programme began with Ray’s short stories, according to Scroll.
- Serialised fiction: In 2012, it aired Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s novella Chander Pahar over six days.
- Translated authors: Scroll named Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Allan Poe, Graham Greene and Ray Bradbury among the writers adapted.
- Original work: The feature reported that the show’s first original story, “Roopkotha,” aired in March, but its passage does not establish the year.
- Later adaptations: Zoom’s December 2025 coverage described an expansion into contemporary fiction and reported authorised adaptations of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None and The ABC Murders. That article also discussed Murder on the Orient Express as upcoming at the time; it does not establish that production’s current release status.
Why the show matters to Bengali listeners
The programme’s audience is not limited to people listening in Kolkata. Scroll’s 2018 feature quoted Ali saying that Bengali families outside West Bengal and abroad had responded positively, in part because children did not always encounter Bengali literature at school. “The show has bridged this gap and has helped connect the new generation to Bengali literature,” he said.
That is Ali’s account of the show’s role, rather than a measured finding about all listeners. Still, it points to a meaningful possibility: audio performance can make literary works easier to share across generations and places, particularly for listeners who want to hear stories in Bengali.

How it moved beyond the radio slot
Sunday Suspense’s online life widened the potential audience for a programme that began on radio. Chakrabarti recalled the first step away from the broadcast format: “What we did to take it out of radio was [to] bring out audio CDs, which were still a thing back then,” she said. Scroll’s 2018 feature also described later unofficial copying and apps; those are historical observations, not guidance on present-day access.
That feature reported that Radio Mirchi’s YouTube channel had archived every episode since December 2017, making the programme available to listeners beyond Kolkata. This is a statement published in 2018, not confirmation of the channel’s current catalogue or official listening options. Current FM scheduling and official platform availability are not established here. An iHeart search listing showed episode entries dated June and July 2026, but the page returned a 404 when opened, so it does not confirm that the feed is accessible.

Scroll also quoted a contributor who said online streaming made radio-originated stories easier to discuss publicly. That observation suggests how distribution can change a programme’s cultural visibility: a broadcast can become something listeners revisit and talk about outside its original slot.

There is no like-for-like evidence in the cited reporting that compares Sunday Suspense with Netflix, and no basis for saying the radio show beats Netflix on audience size, catalogue, reach or any other measured metric. “Netflix for books” is a cultural comparison attributed by Scroll to Bengali filmmaker Indranil Roychowdhury, not a performance ranking.

The metaphor makes sense as shorthand for an immersive catalogue of stories, but the two offer different experiences. Sunday Suspense adapts literature for the ear and has Bengali-language cultural roots; Netflix is a video platform. One began as a radio programme and developed an online presence, while Netflix’s defining medium is screen-based storytelling. Those are qualitative distinctions, not evidence of superiority.
Zoom’s December 2025 article reported more than 670 stories and cited over 1.07 billion views, 330 million-plus listening hours, and 15.2 billion impressions across YouTube and Gaana. Zoom did not show a measurement method in the material reported here, so these should be treated as figures attributed to that article—not as audited or independently verified metrics, or as proof of a comparison with Netflix.
Where can you listen?
The clearest specific archive information in the cited reporting is Scroll’s 2018 account of episodes on Radio Mirchi’s YouTube channel dating back to December 2017. Because current schedules and official platform availability are unconfirmed, check Radio Mirchi’s own current channels or listings in your region before relying on a particular service. The historical reports do not establish a current FM time, a complete present-day archive, or an accessible iHeart feed.
