Disney’s Lilo & Stitch was the season’s biggest commercial success, while Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Jurassic World Rebirth, How to Train Your Dragon, and F1: The Movie supplied the main theatrical spectacle. Netflix added a separate streaming slate led by KPop Demon Hunters, Happy Gilmore 2, and The Old Guard 2.
This retrospective uses the U.S. industry definition of summer movie season: the first weekend of May through Labor Day, or May 2 through September 1, 2025. That convention captures the period when studios scheduled their largest theatrical releases, rather than the meteorological summer. The Los Angeles Times has described this industry framing.
Summer movies 2025 at a glance
| What you want | Best starting points | Where they belonged |
|---|---|---|
| Family viewing | Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, The Bad Guys 2, The Smurfs, KPop Demon Hunters | Theatrical and streaming |
| Superheroes | Thunderbolts*, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps | Theatrical |
| Action and spectacle | Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, Jurassic World Rebirth, F1: The Movie, The Old Guard 2 | Theatrical and streaming |
| Horror and darker genre films | Sinners, 28 Years Later, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Weapons, Fear Street: Prom Queen | Mixed release dates and formats |
| Adult counterprogramming | Materialists, The Life of Chuck, The Phoenician Scheme | Primarily theatrical |
The important distinction is that these were not all blockbusters, and they did not all compete in the same way. The 2025 calendar combined wide theatrical releases, smaller films, limited rollouts, and streaming-first premieres.
May: the season opened with superheroes and a live-action classic
Thunderbolts* — May 2
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* opened the U.S. summer season on May 2. Its appeal was its unusual team: Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker were brought together in an ensemble built around antiheroes and damaged operatives rather than Marvel’s most traditional heroic lineup.

Choose it if you want a superhero team movie with a more unconventional roster and a less pristine group dynamic. It was also a useful starting point for viewers who wanted to follow Marvel’s 2025 theatrical slate without beginning with another origin story.
Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning
Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning occupied the Memorial Day tentpole position. It represented the classic summer action model: a returning star, a long-running franchise, and large-scale set pieces designed for a theatrical audience. It belonged in the action conversation even though the season ultimately produced a wider variety of successful genres than the usual tentpole narrative suggests.
Lilo & Stitch — the season’s commercial standout
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch became the biggest commercial success of the summer. It was also the only film associated with the season to pass $1 billion worldwide, according to contemporary box-office reporting. That made it the clearest example of the season’s strength in family entertainment and recognizable intellectual property.
For families, Lilo & Stitch was the safest first recommendation. For industry watchers, its performance was more significant than simply another successful remake: it showed that a familiar family property could become the season’s central theatrical event even while superhero and action franchises received much of the advance attention.

June: dinosaurs, dragons, racing, and alternatives to franchise spectacle
How to Train Your Dragon
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon brought animated-franchise nostalgia into a family fantasy adventure. It was a natural theatrical choice for viewers looking for dragons, friendship, and accessible adventure rather than superhero combat or realistic action.
It also illustrated one of the defining patterns of summer 2025: studios relied on known properties, but the season’s releases did not all offer the same tone. How to Train Your Dragon was aimed at family fantasy, while other June releases pursued creature horror, sports drama, or adult-oriented storytelling.
Jurassic World Rebirth
Jurassic World Rebirth delivered the creature-feature side of the summer. Its appeal was straightforward: dinosaurs, franchise-scale science fiction, and spectacle. It was a better choice than How to Train Your Dragon for viewers seeking danger and monster-movie thrills, and a better fit than a superhero film for people who wanted a science-fiction adventure built around creatures rather than comic-book mythology.
F1: The Movie
F1: The Movie gave the season a sports-drama alternative to the usual fantasy and superhero fare. Its subject was professional racing, but its role in the calendar was broader: it offered a large-format theatrical spectacle to adults who might not have been interested in comic-book franchises or dinosaur sequels.

The film belonged in the theatrical spectacle category, but it should not be described as interchangeable with a superhero tentpole. Its draw was the combination of competition, speed, and sports drama.
Adult counterprogramming in June
Summer 2025 was not only a parade of franchise sequels. Materialists, The Life of Chuck, The Phoenician Scheme, and similar releases gave audiences romance, drama, literary-minded storytelling, and independent or prestige-oriented alternatives.
Sinners also deserves mention as one of the season’s notable original genre successes, although it opened immediately before the conventional summer frame. It is best described as an adjacent late-spring release rather than retroactively called a May summer movie. That distinction matters if you are building a chronological list.
July: the densest month for recognizable franchises
Superman — July 11
James Gunn’s Superman opened nationwide and in IMAX on July 11, 2025. It was the first DC Studios feature in the company’s new cinematic continuity, with David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
For superhero viewers, Superman was the foundational choice of the summer. Unlike Thunderbolts*, which centered on an unconventional antihero ensemble, it presented a new starting point for DC’s main cinematic direction. The film therefore worked both as a superhero pick and as a relaunch for viewers who wanted to see where the new DC continuity began.
I Know What You Did Last Summer
I Know What You Did Last Summer gave horror audiences a legacy-sequel option during the month dominated by superhero releases. It was a useful reminder that July’s audience was not limited to four-quadrant franchise adventure: slasher and horror viewers had their own recognizable series to follow.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps — July 25
Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened theatrically on July 25. Its retro-futurist, 1960s-inspired design and focus on Marvel’s First Family distinguished it from the antihero energy of Thunderbolts*. The central cast included Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Choose it if you want a superhero movie with a family-adventure identity and a deliberately period-inspired visual world. In the season’s superhero lineup, Thunderbolts* was the antihero ensemble, Superman was the DC relaunch, and Fantastic Four was the retro-futurist Marvel family adventure.

More July options
The Smurfs and The Naked Gun broadened the month’s family and comedy offerings. Netflix also premiered Happy Gilmore 2 on July 25, giving viewers a streaming alternative on the same date that The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrived in theaters.
August and late summer: animation, horror, and word of mouth
The Bad Guys 2
The Bad Guys 2 was one of the late-summer animated and family-oriented choices. It belonged on a family watch list alongside Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Smurfs, but its release scale and commercial impact should not be treated as identical to the season’s largest tentpoles.
Weapons
Weapons became a notable late-summer horror hit and one of the season’s strongest word-of-mouth genre titles. It arrived after the core July tentpole period, so it should be presented as a late-summer horror recommendation rather than inserted into the May launch section.
For viewers assembling a darker genre lineup, the useful sequence was not strictly chronological: Sinners offered an adjacent original genre success, 28 Years Later added another major horror option, I Know What You Did Last Summer supplied legacy-franchise slasher appeal, Weapons represented late-summer momentum, and Fear Street: Prom Queen provided a streaming-first continuation.
Netflix’s streaming-first summer movies
Netflix’s 2025 summer slate should be read as a separate distribution category, not folded into a theatrical box-office ranking. These films premiered on the service rather than opening in U.S. theaters as conventional summer releases:
- Fear Street: Prom Queen — May 23: a horror continuation for viewers who preferred a direct-to-streaming franchise release.
- KPop Demon Hunters — June 20: animated action-comedy with music-driven family appeal.
- The Old Guard 2 — July 2: a streaming action sequel and the most direct Netflix counterpart to the season’s theatrical action films.
- Madea’s Destination Wedding — July 11: broad comedy built around a familiar character and audience.
- Happy Gilmore 2 — July 25: sports comedy and nostalgia-driven sequel viewing.
- My Oxford Year — August 1: romance and coming-of-age viewing.
- Fixed — August 13: a later-summer Netflix feature.
- The Thursday Murder Club — August 28: ensemble mystery-comedy adapted from Richard Osman’s novel.
KPop Demon Hunters was the clearest Netflix recommendation for families seeking animation, music, and action without a theater trip. The Old Guard 2 suited viewers who wanted a sequel in the action lane from home, while Happy Gilmore 2 was the obvious choice for broad sports comedy and nostalgia. Romance viewers had My Oxford Year, mystery fans had The Thursday Murder Club, and horror viewers had Fear Street: Prom Queen.
Netflix also published a separate summer-themed movie roundup in August. That list used “summer” to describe atmosphere and setting, not simply release date. The distinction is useful: a release-year guide answers what arrived during summer 2025, while a seasonal mood list can recommend films from any year that feel like summer.
What the summer 2025 box office revealed
The U.S. summer theatrical box office was commercially healthy but not defined by one enormous cultural phenomenon. The season finished roughly flat year over year at about $3.67 billion domestically, while Lilo & Stitch was the only film to pass $1 billion worldwide.

That does not mean the season lacked successful films. It means the success was distributed across dependable family films, franchise sequels, superhero releases, sports spectacle, and selected original or adult-oriented movies. Lilo & Stitch was the standout commercial story, while How to Train Your Dragon, Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and F1: The Movie formed the central theatrical conversation.
The more defensible summary is that summer 2025 was a season of reliable franchise and family performance rather than a repeat of a broad cultural event such as Barbenheimer. For exact domestic rankings or a final seasonal-gross table, use a current summer-season table from Box Office Mojo and a release schedule from The Numbers; domestic totals, worldwide totals, and summer-only totals are different measurements and should not be mixed.

For families
Start with Lilo & Stitch if you want the season’s biggest family success, How to Train Your Dragon for fantasy adventure, or The Bad Guys 2 for animation and comedy. The Smurfs was another family-oriented theatrical choice, while KPop Demon Hunters offered an at-home animated action-comedy option on Netflix.
Because these films used different distribution models, the choice was also practical: theatrical releases offered a group outing, while KPop Demon Hunters was available as a streaming-first selection rather than a box-office competitor.

Pick Thunderbolts* for an antihero ensemble, Superman for the beginning of DC Studios’ new cinematic continuity, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps for a retro-futurist Marvel family adventure. Watching all three provided a useful snapshot of how differently the major comic-book studios approached their 2025 summer releases.
For action and spectacle
Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning was the Memorial Day-scale action choice. Jurassic World Rebirth was the pick for dinosaur spectacle, and F1: The Movie for racing and sports drama. The Old Guard 2 supplied a convenient streaming sequel for viewers who wanted action at home.
There is no need to claim that theatrical presentation was automatically better or that streaming was automatically more convenient for everyone. The useful distinction is the viewing occasion: a large-scale outing for the theatrical releases, and immediate home access for Netflix’s premieres.
For horror and darker genre films
Build a mixed list from Sinners, 28 Years Later, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Weapons, and Fear Street: Prom Queen. Keep the dates and formats clear: Sinners was adjacent to the formal summer window, Weapons was a late-summer theatrical title, and Fear Street: Prom Queen was a Netflix premiere.

For adult counterprogramming
Choose Materialists, The Life of Chuck, or The Phoenician Scheme if the season’s superhero and family franchises were not your priority. These films were important to the overall picture because they showed that summer programming still included romance, drama, literary adaptation, and auteur-oriented alternatives.
Want to revisit the season at home?
How to read this list correctly
- Summer release does not mean summer blockbuster. Some films were major tentpoles; others were smaller theatrical releases or counterprogramming.
- Theatrical and streaming premieres are not equivalent box-office entries. Netflix’s premiere dates identify when subscribers could watch the films, not when they opened in U.S. cinemas.
- Market labels matter. The approximately $3.67 billion figure refers to the domestic summer theatrical market. The $1 billion figure for Lilo & Stitch refers to worldwide performance.
- Availability is separate from release history. A film’s 2025 theatrical date does not guarantee that the same rental, subscription, Blu-ray, or digital-purchase option remains available in every country.
- Chronology matters. Adjacent releases such as Sinners and late-summer titles such as Weapons should not be moved into the May launch simply because they fit the season’s mood.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counted as the 2025 U.S. summer movie season?
For this guide, the season ran from the first weekend of May through Labor Day: May 2 through September 1, 2025. This is the industry-oriented theatrical definition, not the meteorological season.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat was the biggest summer movie of 2025?
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch was the season’s standout commercial success. It was the only film associated with the season to exceed $1 billion worldwide.
Were Netflix films part of the summer 2025 movie list?
Yes, but they should be categorized separately from theatrical releases. Netflix’s slate included Fear Street: Prom Queen, KPop Demon Hunters, The Old Guard 2, Happy Gilmore 2, My Oxford Year, and The Thursday Murder Club, among others.
Was Sinners technically a summer 2025 movie?
It was a useful summer-season recommendation and one of the year’s notable original genre successes, but it was released immediately before the conventional May-to-Labor-Day summer window. It is more accurate to call it an adjacent late-spring release.
The Bottom Line
Summer 2025 was strongest when treated as a varied menu rather than a single blockbuster race. Choose Lilo & Stitch or How to Train Your Dragon for family viewing, Thunderbolts*, Superman, or The Fantastic Four: First Steps for superheroes, Jurassic World Rebirth or F1: The Movie for spectacle, and the mixed theatrical-and-streaming horror list for darker viewing. Commercially, Lilo & Stitch led the season; culturally, the defining story was the breadth of dependable franchises and alternatives rather than one Barbenheimer-scale phenomenon.
