Spoilers for Season 3, especially the finale, “Head to the Heart.” Maggie and Cal choose to stay in Timberlake, and Maggie plans to open a local general practice. Then Liam arrives at Rob’s restaurant opening and calls Maggie his wife. That reveal turns their hopeful new beginning into a cliffhanger: the finale does not explain the full history of Maggie and Liam’s marriage or what Liam wants now.
What happens in the Season 3 finale?
“Head to the Heart” is Season 3, episode 10 and the season finale. It aired on The CW in the United States on July 16, 2025, according to The CW’s episode guide.
The finale brings several storylines to a turning point. Maggie and Cal decide to remain in Timberlake, while Maggie considers how to keep practicing medicine without returning to her former life as a neurosurgeon. The immediate resolution is hopeful, but it is disrupted when Liam appears at Rob’s restaurant opening and identifies himself as Maggie’s husband. Netflix Tudum’s finale recap also notes that Edna survives after Maggie removes her brain tumor, and that Sydney and Rafe remain together while confronting questions about marriage and work.
Why is Liam’s arrival such a shock?
Maggie had described Liam as a summer fling. His greeting—calling her his wife—reveals that their relationship was more consequential than that description suggested. The letter that worried Cal earlier in the season was addressed to Liam; Maggie had left him to pursue her career and had not stopped to get divorced, according to Netflix Tudum.

The surprise is not simply the return of an old romantic interest. It is the sudden appearance of an unresolved legal and emotional tie just as Maggie has chosen a future with Cal. The gap between what Maggie previously said about Liam and what his arrival reveals is the cliffhanger’s central tension.
Are Maggie and Cal still together?
At the end of Season 3, Maggie and Cal choose to stay in Timberlake together. Their decision is a hopeful commitment in the moment, not proof that their relationship is settled. Liam’s arrival leaves them facing questions the finale does not answer: what Maggie’s marriage means for her future with Cal, and how she will respond to the past she had left behind.

What does Maggie decide about her career?
Cal sees Maggie at the hospital and believes she misses her surgical career. The finale does not make her choose between medicine and Timberlake. Instead, Maggie recognizes that she can continue practicing locally and plans to open a general practice serving the community.
The decision continues an identity question that has shaped the season. The CW’s series synopsis describes Season 3 as beginning after Maggie confesses her love to Cal and leaves neurosurgery to help run her father Sully’s campground. Bell Media’s Season 3 press kit likewise frames her as a neurosurgeon who has made the Crossing her home, amid unresolved family and personal strains. Her plan for a local practice offers a way to keep her medical skills while building a life in Timberlake.

Is Sully leaving the Crossing for good?
No permanent departure is established. Sully tells Helen he is going to Ireland with her, describing the trip as the start of a new chapter. He makes clear that leaving does not mean he will stop loving the Crossing or never return. His departure gives Maggie and the others room to look after the place while he pursues a life beyond it.

The finale reveals that Maggie and Liam are still legally married, but it does not fill in the entire story behind that fact. It leaves open why they married, the full circumstances of their separation, and what Liam hopes to accomplish by appearing now. It also does not establish that Maggie deliberately deceived Cal or knew Liam would return.

That uncertainty is what makes “Maggie’s past comes back to haunt her” an apt description of the ending: she has chosen community medicine and a future with Cal, but an unfinished chapter has abruptly entered that future. The show is based on Robyn Carr’s book series, as The CW’s series page notes; the television finale’s Liam reveal should be understood as part of the adaptation’s story, not as a complete explanation of the marriage.
