In Suits LA Season 1, Episode 3, “He Knew,” a possible motive in Lester Thompson’s murder case collides with Ted Black’s fractured friendship with Stuart Lane. Stuart is representing Lester’s wife in her divorce—and a revelation in Ted’s father’s will makes their conflict painfully personal.
What happens in Suits LA episode 3?
“He Knew” aired March 9, 2025. Genevieve Sparling wrote the episode, and Christopher Misiano directed it. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing credits Stephen Amell as Ted Black, Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane, and Kevin Weisman as Lester Thompson.
Ted and investigator Kevin Dillon pursue new information in Lester’s suspected murder case. Lester’s wife had been having an affair with the producing partner Lester is suspected of killing, giving investigators a possible motive to examine. Ted tries to determine whether Lester knew about the affair. The episode summaries report that Ted reads Lester’s reaction as evidence that he did not know; that is Ted’s inference, not a definitive finding established by the available episode descriptions. (TV Guide; Rotten Tomatoes)
Why is Stuart representing Lester’s wife?
Lester’s wife has hired Stuart to represent her in divorce proceedings. That professional choice places Stuart on the other side of a matter closely tied to Ted’s murder investigation, adding strain between the former partners. TV Guide’s summary says Ted visits Stuart, who is trying to tell him something, but Ted cuts the conversation short. TheWrap likewise describes the divorce representation as escalating tensions between them. Neither source supplies the full exchange, so the episode’s conflict is clearest in the reported setup: their work now pulls them in opposing directions, while their history makes the distance personal. What did Ted’s father’s will say?
The episode summary reports that Ted’s father’s will names Stuart as executor and directs that he be buried beside Ted’s other son. Ted reacts badly. The available summary does not give the will’s exact wording or the full scene, but the revelation gives the conflict a family dimension: Stuart has a formal role in Ted’s father’s affairs even as Ted is shutting him out in the present. (TV Guide)
How the flashback changes the Ted–Stuart conflict
The past storyline connects Ted and Stuart through a mob case that Ted involved his old friend in. The published episode summaries establish that connection without laying out the full sequence of the flashback. Even so, the contrast is sharp: Stuart was once close enough to Ted to be drawn into a dangerous case; now his legal work and place in Ted’s family affairs deepen their estrangement. That contrast is an interpretation of the reported story beats, not an explanation attributed to the show’s creators. (Rotten Tomatoes; TV Guide)

What is the Brian Baumgartner and Patton Oswalt story?
The lighter client story pairs Erica Rollins and Leah Power with Brian Baumgartner, playing an exaggerated version of himself. He wants help moving from comedy into dramatic work and initially insists on a meeting with Tom Hanks. Leah instead arranges a meeting with Patton Oswalt, also playing himself. The celebrity cameos turn a career question into a joke about Hollywood’s expectations and its appetite for famous names.
Creator Aaron Korsh described the appeal of this kind of guest role to TheWrap: “That lets us have a lot of fun at ourselves and at the entertainment business in general.” (TheWrap)
