The episode cuts between present-day Los Angeles and flashbacks to New York, so the Eddie reveal depends on keeping those timelines separate.
Twist 1: Stuart’s merger becomes a takeover
Ted Black and Stuart Lane built a Los Angeles firm focused on entertainment law and criminal defense. While Ted is distracted by his father’s illness and his unresolved past, Stuart completes a merger without him, taking much of the staff and client base to establish a rival firm. Ted had signed an agreement that enabled Stuart to take the group, making the move more than a last-minute maneuver.

The split is also personal. Stuart says Ted called him a “flea” and repeatedly treated criminal defense as less valuable than entertainment law. Creator Aaron Korsh described that insult as the breaking point after years of disrespect, rather than a grievance invented for the merger. TV Insider’s premiere recap and TVLine’s interview with Korsh discuss the firm split and its backstory.
Ted tries to hold on to the people and clients who remain. Erica Rollins rejects Stuart’s offer to spy on Ted and join him later; Ted responds by making Erica head of entertainment and a partner. Rick Dodson, however, eventually leaves for Stuart’s firm. Those choices deepen the fallout from the takeover, but the central twist is Stuart’s departure with the group—not a separate surprise betrayal by each colleague.

Twist 2: Eddie is dead in the present-day timeline
Eddie appears alongside Ted in the Los Angeles scenes, so the episode initially encourages the viewer to take him as present. The ending reveals that Eddie died in the past. In the New York flashbacks, by contrast, Eddie is alive; those scenes show the family history that shaped Ted’s estrangement from his father.
Ted believes his father failed to protect Eddie, who was convicted and killed, and resents that his father did not attend Eddie’s funeral. That history helps explain why Ted is so guarded when his father is dying. It also makes the reveal more than a mystery about where Eddie is: Ted’s present-day conversations with him give a voice to grief and an unresolved struggle to forgive.
Korsh said present-day Eddie represents Ted’s subconscious and “the voice of forgiveness.” The creator’s explanation is reported in TV Insider and TVLine. The flashbacks should not be read as contradicting the reveal: they take place when Eddie was still alive.
Twist 3: Ted reaches his father, but there is no full reconciliation
Ted avoids visiting his dying father, burdened by the belief that his father failed Eddie. John Amos, playing a version of himself, and Samantha encourage him to go. Ted finally reaches his father’s side as his father is dying.

- Factory sealed DVD
The moment is an attempted goodbye and a step toward the possibility of forgiveness, not a completed repair. The episode does not show Ted and his father resolving their history or reconciling. Its emotional reversal is that Ted acts despite his anger—and arrives in time to say goodbye, but not to undo what came before.

The flashbacks establish Ted’s former life as a federal prosecutor in New York and connect that past to the family wound he carries into his Los Angeles practice. They also clarify which events belong to which time: Eddie is alive in the earlier story, while his appearances beside Ted in the present are not literal encounters with a living brother.
Rank #4
The premiere’s setup for Ted as a New York prosecutor who reinvented himself as an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles is also reflected in NBCUniversal’s series announcement.
