In an obituary published five days later, her editor and friend Sudeshna Shome Ghosh remembered not only a prolific writer but a warm, funny collaborator who took children’s curiosity seriously.
A writer who made history feel close
Ghosh first encountered Sen Gupta’s stories in Target, the English-language children’s magazine she read as a child in the 1980s and 1990s. Sen Gupta began her career as a contributor to the magazine. Its editor, Rosalind Wilson, became an important mentor: she helped Sen Gupta refine her writing for children, encouraged her interest in history and gave her confidence as a professional writer.
That combination—historical curiosity and an instinct for the questions children actually ask—became a hallmark of Sen Gupta’s work as Ghosh describes it. Readers wanted to know what Harappans might have eaten for dinner, what Emperor Ashoka looked like and how the samosa became Indian. Sen Gupta did not treat such questions as trivial. Ghosh remembers her as someone who could make history engaging without making it dull, and who trusted children to think about difficult or contested subjects.
A wide-ranging body of work
Ghosh’s 2021 obituary describes a writing career of more than forty years, with sixty books and innumerable short stories. Those are the career-scale figures reported in the obituary, rather than independently audited totals. Sen Gupta wrote short stories, novellas, illustrated books and comic strips, as well as history, biography, mysteries, food-centered fiction and ghost stories. She worked with Children’s Book Trust, Puffin, Scholastic, Rupa and other publishers.

Old Delhi, friendship and the memoir in progress
Ghosh’s remembrance also gives a portrait of the places and interests that connected the two women. Sen Gupta was Bengali and grew up in Delhi; Ghosh recalls her deep knowledge of Old Delhi and affection for Daryaganj and Nizamuddin. They shared an interest in food, Bengali children’s literature, ghost stories and the films of Satyajit Ray. These are glimpses from a friendship, not a complete account of Sen Gupta’s life.
The last manuscript Ghosh describes editing with Sen Gupta was a memoir about growing up in Old Delhi and being Bengali in Delhi. It brought together family stories and memories of Daryaganj in the 1940s and 1950s. They were still discussing edits and timelines a fortnight before Ghosh’s obituary appeared. Sen Gupta also had other children’s-book and publisher projects underway; the obituary does not confirm the memoir’s eventual publication or the fate of those projects.

In an excerpt included by Ghosh, Sen Gupta calls the memoir “a selfish book” written to please herself, allowing herself to be “sentimental, unapologetically nostalgic, and not scholarly at all.” She writes of letting ghosts occupy her head for months, and of laughing at an absurd memory during a morning walk, startling dogs and squirrels. The passage offers a glimpse of the playful, personal voice behind the books.
