Sturgill Simpson’s latest Johnny Blue Skies album, Mutiny After Midnight, was reported released on March 13, 2026, and the accompanying “Mutiny for the Masses” tour is underway. The album is the second release under the Johnny Blue Skies name; the 29-date North American tour runs from September 4 through October 30, 2026. As of October 8, the next listed concert was October 9 in Pittsburgh.
Who is Johnny Blue Skies?
Johnny Blue Skies is the name Sturgill Simpson uses for this musical project. The album and tour bill the group as Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds. Simpson’s official site uses that band name and links to its tour and music pages, though the landing page itself does not provide the detailed itinerary or album information: official artist site.
The name marks a new chapter after Simpson said he had promised to release only five studio albums under his own name. The first Johnny Blue Skies album was Passage du Désir, released in 2024; Mutiny After Midnight is the second. The 2024 tour was called the “Why Not? Tour,” not “Mutiny for the Masses.” The 2024 album announcement described Passage du Désir as an eight-song album produced by Johnny Blue Skies and David Ferguson, with sessions at Clement House Recording Studio in Nashville and Abbey Road Studios in London.
What is the new album, Mutiny After Midnight?
Pitchfork reported on February 13, 2026, that Mutiny After Midnight was scheduled for release on March 13 through Atlantic Outpost, on vinyl, CD, and cassette. That date has passed, so it is best described as released on the reported date. The available reporting establishes those physical formats; it does not establish a digital edition, chart position, sales total, or review score. Pitchfork’s album announcement includes the track list and Simpson’s letter about the record.
