Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a YouTube Live stream built around prerecorded videos, vMix has the clearer documented workflow for sequencing multiple files: its vMix 29 guide describes video-file inputs and a PlayList that automates inputs with start times, durations, and transitions. Streamlabs Desktop supports YouTube streaming, but its official material cited here does not establish an equivalent playlist or continuous-loop control. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on test. Neither source set verifies a one-click seamless repeat for a single file, so check the current controls before relying on an unattended loop.
Which should you choose for prerecorded YouTube Live?
- Choose vMix if: you want to automate a sequence of prerecorded segments and are using a supported Windows computer. Its vMix 29 guide documents video-file inputs and a PlayList with start times, durations, and transition effects. vMix User Guide: Introduction and Features
- Consider Streamlabs Desktop if: you already use it for a YouTube production and want to keep using its general streaming studio. Its official setup and YouTube pages confirm source-based production and YouTube streaming, but do not document an equivalent file playlist or continuous-loop setting. Do not treat Streamlabs Instant Replay as a file-loop feature: it captures recent live content in a replay buffer and plays it on command, rather than continuously feeding a prerecorded video file. How to Setup Instant Replays on Streamlabs Desktop
The key distinction is documented playlist automation versus less clearly documented prerecorded playback—not a verified difference in seamless repeat behavior. Confirm that behavior in the current application before scheduling a long unattended stream.
What the two applications document
| Comparison point | vMix | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Prerecorded video inputs | vMix 29 guide lists video files among its input sources. Source | Official material confirms adding production sources generally; the sources cited here do not specify a dedicated prerecorded-video playlist or loop control. Source |
| Playlist automation | PlayList automates multiple inputs with start times, durations, and transitions; the guide does not by itself confirm a one-click seamless repeat for one file. Source | Not established by the official pages cited here. Check the controls in your current build rather than assuming a repeat option. |
| YouTube Live | The vMix 29 guide documents YouTube Live output. Source | Streamlabs’ official page identifies YouTube as a supported destination. Source |
| Operating system | Windows software; its supported hardware page lists Windows 10 and 11. Supported Hardware | Streamlabs lists Windows and macOS support. Review its current system requirements for the applicable release. System Requirements |

Both vendors’ materials make clear that a computer’s capability and the demands of the production matter. Minimum requirements are not a performance guarantee for a particular resolution, file, scene, or length of stream.

How to set up prerecorded segments in vMix
The documented workflow supports playlist sequencing. The exact controls and repeat behavior can vary by current version, so use the vMix 29 guide and your installed build to verify the final playback behavior.
- Prepare the files. Put the video segments you plan to use on the Windows computer running vMix. Confirm that each file plays correctly before building the production. The vMix guide lists video-file inputs, but the sources cited here do not establish a universal supported codec list for every file and system.
- Add each file as an input. In vMix, add the video files as inputs using the current input controls described in the vMix 29 guide. Give inputs recognizable names so you can match playlist entries to the intended segments.
- Build the PlayList. Use the PlayList feature to arrange the inputs in the desired order. Set the start time, duration, and transition effect for each entry as needed. The guide documents these automation controls for multiple inputs.
- Verify the ending and repeat behavior. The playlist documentation establishes sequencing, not a guaranteed one-click seamless loop of a single file or an endlessly repeating playlist. Test the end of the last item and start of the first on the current version. If you need continuous replay, use only a repeat control you can confirm in the current interface and test its behavior before going live.
- Configure YouTube Live output. Follow the current vMix instructions for YouTube Live output and connect the appropriate YouTube stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in screenshots, recordings, or public chat, and regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Run a supervised test. Confirm that the correct inputs play in order, that transitions behave as expected, and that the stream reaches the intended YouTube Live event before depending on automation unattended.
How to assess Streamlabs Desktop for this use
Streamlabs’ official setup material explains adding sources and going live, and its YouTube page confirms YouTube support. The cited pages do not resolve whether the current media-source controls include the repeat behavior you need. If you already work in Streamlabs Desktop, inspect the controls for the media source in your installed build and test a full playback cycle before scheduling a long stream. Do not substitute Instant Replay: it is for replaying recent captured stream footage, not documented as a continuous prerecorded-file playlist.

Playback automation
If your program is a sequence of different recordings, vMix’s documented PlayList controls are the more direct match. If the requirement is a single video that must repeat seamlessly, the available sources do not establish that either product guarantees that exact behavior; test the current software and file combination.
Computer and operating system
vMix is Windows-based, with Windows 10/11 listed on its supported hardware page. Streamlabs lists Windows and macOS. Check the current vendor requirements and assess the machine against your actual production workload; the operating system list alone does not show how well a specific setup will perform.

Sources and production complexity
List what the stream needs before choosing: prerecorded files, any other production sources, the order of segments, and transitions. vMix’s guide documents file inputs and playlist sequencing. Streamlabs’ cited setup information covers source-based production generally, but not a matching automated file-playlist workflow. Neither a capture card nor a control surface is necessary just because the program is prerecorded; extra hardware only makes sense if another requirement calls for it.
License cost
vMix advertises a free 60-day trial and license options on its official site. Streamlabs presents Desktop as free and also offers optional paid features. Pricing and plan details can change, so check the vendors’ current pages before buying or choosing a plan.

Copyright and YouTube readiness
Having a video file does not establish that you have the right to stream its contents. Before going live, check the permissions for the footage, music, images, and other material in every segment. A prerecorded production should also be an intentional program, not a promise that simply looping a file will secure audience reach or monetization. Review YouTube’s current rules for live streams, copyright, and monetization before using content you did not create or license.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos live on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, once per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
