If a prerecorded video appears black in Streamlabs Desktop, first check whether it plays normally in your browser outside Streamlabs. If the browser picture is fine but the Streamlabs preview is black, troubleshoot the capture source and—especially on a laptop—the graphics processor Streamlabs is using. If the YouTube player is also blank, start with browser playback checks instead. The symptom alone does not identify one definite cause.
First, find out where the picture disappears
Play the same video in the browser without relying on the Streamlabs preview. This separates a browser playback problem from a capture problem.
- The video is visible in the browser, but not in Streamlabs: focus on the selected capture source, its configuration, and the GPU path.
- The video is blank in the browser too: troubleshoot browser playback and graphics drivers before changing Streamlabs capture settings.
A black preview in Streamlabs and a blank YouTube player are different symptoms. Fixing one path may not fix the other.
If the video plays in the browser but the Streamlabs preview is black
Check and recreate the capture source
- In Streamlabs Desktop, identify the source intended to show the browser or video window. Confirm that the selected source and capture mode correspond to the window or display you are trying to show.
- Restart Streamlabs Desktop as administrator, then remove and re-add the capture source and check the preview again. Streamlabs lists this as general capture-source troubleshooting; its guidance is framed around game capture, so it is not a guaranteed fix for a prerecorded YouTube video.
- If the preview remains black, check whether overlays, graphics drivers, or other software could be interfering with capture. These are general troubleshooting avenues, not a confirmed cause of this particular symptom.
On a laptop, check which GPU Streamlabs uses
Some laptops have integrated and discrete graphics processors. Streamlabs’ laptop guidance describes capture trouble when the application and capture path involve different GPUs. It recommends disabling Force GPU as render device under Settings > Advanced, in the Video section, then restarting Streamlabs Desktop and testing again. Menu details and graphics-selection options can vary by Windows version and configuration.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Streamlabs Support’s laptop troubleshooting guide explains the limitation this way: “Unfortunately, this is a limitation of laptops when trying to use Game Capture and Window/Display Capture because Streamlabs Desktop can only be run by one of the two graphics processors at any given moment on a laptop.” This describes laptop capture behavior; it does not establish that every black preview has a GPU cause.
For relevant Windows configurations, Streamlabs also describes selecting integrated or power-saving graphics for display or window capture. The available guidance does not establish one universal menu path for every Windows version, so use the graphics settings available on your computer and retest after changing them.

If the YouTube player is blank outside Streamlabs too
YouTube’s guidance for a green video player recommends checks that can also help investigate a blank browser-rendered video, although they are not a guaranteed fix for this exact Streamlabs symptom:
- Try playing the video in a different browser.
- Turn off hardware acceleration in the browser, restart it, and try playback again. Browser labels and menu paths vary.
- Check for graphics-driver updates and install an appropriate update if one is available.
Change one setting at a time and retest, so you can tell whether a change affected browser playback. If the browser video becomes visible but the Streamlabs preview remains black, return to the capture-source and GPU checks.

What to note if the problem continues
A more specific diagnosis depends on the setup. Before asking for further help, record:
- Your operating system and whether the computer is a laptop or desktop.
- For a laptop, whether it has integrated and discrete graphics, if known.
- Your browser and version, and whether hardware acceleration is enabled.
- Your Streamlabs Desktop version and the capture source type and mode you selected.
- Whether the video appears normally outside Streamlabs, and which troubleshooting steps changed the result.
Without those details, it is not possible to distinguish reliably between browser playback, source configuration, and GPU-related capture behavior.

Or let prerecorded video run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than capture a browser window in Streamlabs, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not repair a black Streamlabs preview, capture a camera, or stream to other platforms; it plays uploaded videos to YouTube.
