OBS Studio, XSplit Broadcaster, and Streamlabs Desktop all support capture cards. OBS is the cross-platform choice, XSplit documents a Windows dual-PC workflow, and Streamlabs provides device-specific setup and troubleshooting guidance. Support for capture cards does not mean every card works with every computer: verify your exact card, operating system, connection, and video format before building your setup.
Which streaming software works with a capture card?
| Software | Capture-card support | Operating system notes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Lists capture cards among the sources you can add to a scene. It is free and open source. | Downloads are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux; check the current system requirements for your setup. | Creators who want a cross-platform option and flexible scenes. |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Its dual-PC instructions show how to select a capture card as a video device. | Broadcaster is Windows-only; the requirements page lists Windows 10/11 64-bit. | Windows users following a documented two-computer workflow. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Publishes capture-card setup and troubleshooting instructions, including device-selection and conflict issues. | Check its current requirements and the card maker’s instructions for your computer. | Users who want capture-card-specific setup guidance and troubleshooting. |
There is no universal winner based on capture-card support alone. Compare the software’s operating-system requirements, compatibility with your exact card, intended workflow, and the workload your computer can handle. OBS Studio lists capture cards as scene sources; XSplit Broadcaster documents a dual-PC setup; and Streamlabs provides setup and troubleshooting material.
How to choose software and a capture card
Check the operating system and workflow
- Windows, macOS, or Linux: OBS offers downloads for all three, subject to its current requirements. XSplit Broadcaster is Windows-only. Confirm the requirements for the exact version you intend to use.
- Two-computer streaming: Decide which computer will run the streaming software. In XSplit’s documented workflow, Broadcaster runs on the streaming PC, where the capture card is selected as a video device.
- One-computer streaming: Confirm that your computer can handle the game or video source, capture input, scenes, and encoding at the same time.
Verify the exact card and format
Check the card maker’s compatibility and setup documentation for your model, operating system, connection, and desired input format. The OBS certified-device list is one useful compatibility signal: it names devices and supported platforms, but it is not a guarantee for every software, OS, and device combination. Elgato notes that using its 4K S with third-party applications such as OBS, XSplit, or Streamlabs can have different requirements from using Elgato Studio; consult the 4K S specifications for the card-specific details.
Before buying, match the card to the source’s video output, the streaming computer’s ports and operating system, the resolution and frame rate you want to capture, the audio route, and any passthrough or latency needs. A generic USB HDMI card should not be assumed to support every resolution, frame rate, or operating system. The certified list includes examples such as the ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Box CU4K30 and EVGA XR1 Lite, but compatibility still depends on the listed device and your configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate software compatibility from performance
A card appearing in the source list does not mean the computer can stream your intended settings smoothly. OBS cautions that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability; resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all affect load. Use the current OBS system requirements as a starting point, then check your card and software requirements together. Your internet upload capacity also needs to suit the stream settings you choose.
How to add a capture card as a source
- Install the streaming app on the intended streaming computer. Follow the capture-card manufacturer’s current setup and driver instructions. Some devices need manufacturer software; do not assume one universal driver process.
- Connect the video source to the card. Connect the source device’s video output to the card input, then connect the card to the streaming computer as its manual specifies. Ports and supported formats differ by model.
- Add the device in your streaming software. In XSplit Broadcaster, use Add Source > Devices > Video, then select the capture card from the device list. In OBS, add it using the video-capture-source workflow. Controls and available formats depend on the device and current software version.
- Check both picture and sound. Confirm that the source image appears and that audio reaches the intended mixer or scene. A working video feed alone does not verify the audio path.
- Set stream output to match the whole system. Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings that the source, card, computer, software, and internet connection can sustain. Do not assume the card’s maximum input format is also a reliable stream setting.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before a public stream. Check for missing audio, stutter, delay, or frame drops, and adjust one setting at a time if the system struggles.
Capture-card troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Card does not appear in the source list | Connection, drivers or manufacturer software, and whether the operating system recognizes the device. | Reconnect it, follow the maker’s setup instructions, and reopen the source selector. Check the exact card’s compatibility with your OS and app. |
| Card appears but cannot be selected or opened | Whether another program or an existing scene/source is already using the device. | Close other capture or camera applications and remove or disable duplicate active sources, then try selecting the card again. Streamlabs specifically identifies device conflicts as a possible cause. |
| Video works but audio is missing | The card’s audio capability and the selected audio path in the capture and streaming setup. | Verify the card manual and software settings, then test audio independently from video. The correct route varies by device and source. |
| Image is unstable or the stream drops frames | Whether source format, capture settings, encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and upload capacity are within the system’s capabilities. | Reduce output demands or scene load and test again. Check software and card requirements rather than assuming a device’s advertised maximum is sustainable for your full setup. |
| Setup steps do not match your menus | Software version, device model, and any manufacturer-specific utility or driver requirement. | Use the current application help and the card maker’s instructions for the exact model; menus and setup paths can change. |
Or let it run in the cloud
A capture card is for bringing live video from a console, camera, or second computer into a software scene. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
