Spoilers for the full film: Yes, Aria is dead. Janiyah’s mother, Delores, tells her that Aria died from a seizure the night before the events of Straw. Janiyah has been hallucinating her daughter’s presence. The apparent fatal shooting at the bank is also a vision: Janiyah survives, leaves with Nicole, and is taken into custody by Detective Raymond.
What happens at the end of Straw?
The reveal comes while Janiyah is still caught in the bank standoff. She asks Nicole to care for Aria, and Nicole agrees. Then Delores reaches Janiyah by phone and tells her that Aria died from a seizure the previous night. The daughter Janiyah has believed she was protecting throughout the day was not physically with her.
Netflix Tudum describes Janiyah’s experiences with Aria as hallucinations. That revelation reframes the escalating events: Janiyah’s determination to keep her daughter safe has been real, but Aria’s presence has not. Netflix Tudum’s ending explanation reports that Tyler Perry found the realization jarring and that Taraji P. Henson described the material as emotionally intense.
Is the bank shooting real?
No. As authorities prepare to storm the bank, Janiyah imagines herself being riddled with bullets. The sequence is a vision, not the actual outcome. Nicole calms her and walks her out of the bank.

Detective Raymond then puts herself between Janiyah and the FBI, handcuffs Janiyah, and takes her into custody. Protesters have gathered outside in solidarity. The film’s real ending is therefore not Janiyah’s death in the bank: she survives the standoff, though the story does not resolve what happens to her after the arrest.
What do Tyler Perry and Taraji P. Henson say about the reveal?
Netflix Tudum attributes this observation about Janiyah to Henson, who plays her: “For Janiyah, the thing that is keeping her alive is her daughter, because that’s her sense of belonging.” The line helps explain why the reveal is so painful: the belief that Aria is with her has been a source of connection amid the day’s mounting crises.

Perry, the film’s writer and director, told Tudum: “Realizing that the child wasn’t there the whole time, it was just as jarring to me as I think it is going to be to the audience.” He also said of directing the realization scene: “Directing that scene floored all of us.” These quotations and the explanation of the ending appear in Netflix Tudum’s November 26, 2025 article.
