Its greatest draw is the possibility of seeing stagecraft make the uncanny feel immediate; its central challenge is ensuring that spectacle serves the characters and remains clear to viewers who do not know the series inside out.
What is The First Shadow about?
Netflix describes the play as a prequel set in Hawkins in 1959, 24 years before the first season. It follows teenage Henry Creel alongside younger versions of Joyce Maldonado, Jim Hopper and Bob Newby. Henry’s arrival coincides with a wave of shocking crimes that disrupts the town’s everyday life. TIME frames the story as an origin story for Henry, who later becomes Vecna; the play’s central mystery is best left unspoiled.
The story is credited to Matt and Ross Duffer, Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry. Trefry wrote the stage script, with Stephen Daldry directing and Justin Martin co-directing. Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions produced the show. Netflix’s production guide gives the setting and creative credits, while TIME’s interview with Trefry discusses its Henry-focused premise.
Does the stage spectacle serve the story?
The play’s defining proposition is that a live performance can make the supernatural feel present in a way a television episode cannot. Director Stephen Daldry told Netflix that the aim was a “visceral experience” of “shock and awe, surprise and delight.” He also described the challenge of combining theatre and television’s “speed of narrative.” Those ambitions set a useful standard for the production: effects matter most when they sharpen the threat, reveal character or help the audience follow the story—not simply when they prompt a question about how an illusion was made.

Some Broadway.com customers have praised the effects and immersive staging. One called the effects “astounding,” and another described the show as an immersive thriller. Those are individual audience submissions, not professional criticism or a representative satisfaction measure, so they are best read as signs of what some attendees value rather than proof of a consensus. The literal audience question “How did they do that?” captures the appeal of stage illusion, but the more important test is whether the wonder remains connected to Henry’s story.
Netflix’s feature on the Broadway production includes Daldry’s comments about narrative pace and theatrical effects. They underscore the balancing act: spectacle can intensify a supernatural story, but it cannot substitute for clarity or character development.

Is it clear to newcomers, and rewarding for fans?
For longtime viewers, the prequel’s appeal lies in seeing familiar Hawkins characters at younger ages and learning more about Henry’s place in the franchise mythology. For newcomers, the 1959 setting and a local mystery offer a way into the story, but the play is still part of a larger fictional universe. Viewers without series context may miss some of the significance attached to names and events that fans recognize.
The most useful measure is not whether the play reproduces the television show onstage, but whether its character work makes the central conflict legible on its own terms. That includes the young actors’ portrayal of Henry, Joyce, Hopper and Bob, as well as how much room the production gives relationships and suspense amid its effects. The available audience comments include praise for the actors playing Henry, Joyce and Hopper, but they do not establish a broader critical verdict.

How long is the show, and what should audiences expect?
Broadway.com lists a runtime of 2 hours 45 minutes, including one intermission, and recommends the production for ages 12 and up. That is a substantial evening in the theatre, making pacing important: the story needs to sustain attention across both halves rather than rely on isolated shocks.
Published content and sensory guidance lists gunfire audio, loud noises and explosions, haze and smoke, flashing lights and strobe, strong language, and depictions of mental illnesses and disorders. Consider that guidance when deciding whether the show is suitable for a child or for someone sensitive to sudden sound, smoke effects or flashing light. A parent reviewer on Broadway.com likewise said the production might feel intense for younger children; that is one person’s reaction, not a substitute for the published guidance.

Is The First Shadow a filmed show?
No full-performance stream is established by the available official material. Netflix has a behind-the-scenes documentary about the production, but that is a documentary about making the show, not a filmed version of the play. Theatre remains the format through which audiences see the production itself.
