What is the story setup?
Spoiler-light preview: Season 5 takes place in the fall of 1987, after Hawkins has been scarred by the opening of the Rifts. The town is under military quarantine, and the government is hunting Eleven while the heroes prepare for their final attempt to stop Vecna.
The anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance is approaching, giving the ending a direct connection to the event that began the series. The central objective is clear: find Vecna and kill him before the threat from the Upside Down destroys Hawkins and spreads beyond it.
The final promotional material describes a complicated rescue-and-destruction plan. The group intends to enter the Abyss to find Vecna’s kidnapped children, merge the connected worlds, and plant a bomb capable of destroying the Abyss, the Mind Flayer, and Vecna’s monsters. Hopper rallies Eleven for one last fight, while the Hawkins group works on its part of the plan.

Could fans watch it in theaters?
