Some viewers described Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 as underwhelming, pointing to slow pacing, heavy exposition and crowded emotional scenes. The response was not unanimous: coverage also recorded praise for cast performances and character moments. And Volume 2 was not the series finale—it was the three-episode Christmas release, followed by a separate finale on New Year’s Eve.
What counts as Volume 2—and when it was released
Netflix’s release schedule split the final season into three drops: four episodes on November 26, 2025; three episodes on Christmas Day; and the series finale on New Year’s Eve. Each release was scheduled for 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The Christmas batch is Volume 2, not the finale itself. Netflix’s schedule lays out the dates and release times.
Why some viewers called the episodes underwhelming
Pacing, exposition and momentum
Hindustan Times reported selected viewer comments describing the episodes as “underwhelming,” “emotionally flat,” “very disappointing,” and “overhyped.” The complaints it summarized focused on restrained pacing, a perceived lack of urgency, and exposition or character monologues that interrupted forward motion. These are examples reported by the outlet, not a representative survey of viewers. Hindustan Times’s reaction roundup includes the comments.
TheWrap reported a related frustration with lengthy plan discussions and a story progression some viewers found convoluted. One X user quoted by the outlet wrote that “most of stranger things season 5 is someone explaining a plan in a quippy manner and everyone calling it insane.” That is one selected post, not evidence of a shared or majority opinion. TheWrap’s coverage also records positive reactions.
#1 Best Overall
Crowded scenes and emotional focus
TheWrap’s account describes criticism of the large ensemble and scenes that felt crowded, including moments where emotional beats had to compete for attention. The Atlantic’s review offers a separate critical interpretation: it argues that repeated story beats and explanations of the new threat leave the three episodes feeling narratively stagnant before the finale. The reviewer also felt that a Will coming-out scene interrupted the plot. Those are the critic’s judgments about the storytelling, not settled facts about how every viewer experienced it. The Atlantic’s review explains that reading, while also describing the episodes as watchable and noting their cliffhangers.
What viewers praised
The reaction coverage was not all negative. TheWrap reported praise for performances and character moments involving Sadie Sink, Caleb McLaughlin, Nell Fisher, Gaten Matarazzo and Joe Keery. That distinction matters: a viewer could find the overall pacing frustrating while still valuing a particular performance or scene. The published examples offer qualitative reactions, not standardized ratings for Volume 2.

How to interpret the reviews without overstating them
- Social-media reactions are examples, not a poll. Hindustan Times and TheWrap selected posts and comments to illustrate criticism and praise; the coverage does not establish what proportion of the audience held either view.
- Critics’ judgments are distinct from fan comments. The Atlantic makes an individual reviewer’s case about narrative momentum, ensemble focus and a specific scene. It should not be presented as a consensus.
- Season-level reception is not Volume 2-only reception. Rotten Tomatoes’ page presents a favorable critics consensus—“Stranger Things plays its cards just right in Season 5, solidifying its pop culture classic status with genuinely captivating genre fare”—alongside an audience summary that says the payoff may not please all fans. Those are season-level framings, not a score or poll for the three Christmas episodes. The page also displays individual positive and negative reviews, and its framing can change as it updates. See Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 5 page.
- Expectations shaped the debate. Because Volume 2 arrived just before the separately released finale, reactions to its cliffhangers and setup could also reflect anticipation about whether the final episode would deliver the payoff viewers wanted. The coverage documents that expectation—for example, the quoted reaction “that finale better stick the landing”—but does not measure how widely it was shared.
Was Volume 2 widely disliked?
The available coverage supports a narrower conclusion: some viewers and at least one critic objected to the pacing, exposition and crowded storytelling, while other viewers praised performances and individual character moments. It does not establish a representative level of fan dissatisfaction, so neither “fans hated it” nor a percentage-based claim is justified by these sources.
