Spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5 and the series finale. Max survives: she escapes Vecna’s mental prison and wakes from her coma in Episode 7. The finale then shows her and Lucas sharing the movie date they had been waiting for—and eventually settling down together.
How Max escapes Vecna
Max is trapped in Vecna’s mental prison, where she keeps running through his mind. She and Holly eventually reach the red void, and Max finds a portal out. But escaping means leaving Holly behind, so Max gives her an emotional pep talk before going through.
Sadie Sink said Max’s knowledge that Lucas had not given up on her was ultimately what helped save her: “I think that’s saving her, ultimately, knowing that he’s not giving up on me. He knows I’m still in there.” Sink told Netflix Tudum that Max’s belief in Lucas’s faith helped her hold on.
Does Max wake up in Season 5?
Yes. In Episode 7, Max wakes in her hospital bed and sees Lucas at her side. The scene marks her return from the coma after nearly two years; it is separate from the finale’s longer-term resolution for the pair.

What Sadie Sink said about the hospital scene
In Netflix Tudum’s Dec. 28, 2025 interview, Sink called the scene a major emotional moment for the cast. “When a scene is so beautifully written and a moment is as touching as that is, it makes my job easier to connect with Max,” she said, adding that Caleb McLaughlin’s performance made her feel “very lucky to be in that room.”
McLaughlin recalled that the cast went quiet after a take and that he, Sink, Maya Hawke, and Amybeth McNulty all cried. Sink also described Max and Holly’s bond as special because they had “obviously had such an intense journey together.”

Do Max and Lucas end up together?
The finale gives Max and Lucas the movie date they had been looking forward to. Matt Duffer told Netflix Tudum that their film is Ghost (1990), starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. The finale also shows that Max and Lucas eventually settle down together. The account does not specify marriage, children, or exactly when that future takes place. Netflix Tudum’s finale explainer identifies the date and their eventual future together.
