Its opening emphasis on large-scale action can leave the characters feeling distant; its final turn toward the people who grew up in Hawkins gives the story a more affecting goodbye. That makes this the season’s most satisfying episode by the end—not because every beat works, but because its emotional destination is worth the uneven journey.
What is “The Rightside Up”?
“The Rightside Up” is the eighth and final episode of Stranger Things Season 5. Netflix released the season in three parts: four episodes on November 26, 2025, three on Christmas, and the finale on New Year’s Eve at 5 p.m. Pacific time. The Associated Press also reported that the finale would receive theater screenings. Netflix’s release schedule and the Associated Press report establish the timing and format.
Does the finale stick the landing?
Mostly, though it takes a while to find its emotional footing. The episode’s scale and serious action dominate much of its early running time. That approach raises the stakes, but it also pushes the ensemble’s everyday bonds—the source of much of the series’ appeal—into the background. The result can feel less like a reunion with the Hawkins kids and more like a procession of high-stakes plot mechanics.
GamesRadar+ reviewer Alex Zalben describes the finale as more than two hours long and criticizes its first hour-plus as a “shoddily filmed mess,” arguing that the characters feel distant from their earlier selves. That is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a consensus. It does, however, capture the finale’s central problem: spectacle can make the characters seem smaller just when their relationships should be driving the story. Zalben’s review also sees the episode become more emotionally effective as it moves toward its close.

The final stretch puts the people back at the center
The tonal shift matters. Dustin’s graduation speech, including its “Chaotic Good” line, brings the story back to the characters’ friendships and shared history. Rather than asking a final battle to carry every kind of meaning, the episode gives those relationships room to register. The late emphasis on who these young people have become is more persuasive than the earlier insistence on how large the threat is.
That is why the finale earns its place as the season’s best episode in the end. The judgment is about its overall payoff, not a claim that it is consistently the season’s strongest hour. Its opening stretch is less controlled and less intimate than its closing one; the last movement is where the series’ character work and its scale finally feel like parts of the same farewell.

Why end with a Dungeons & Dragons campaign?
The closing scene returns the group to the Wheelers’ basement for one final Dungeons & Dragons campaign, then has Mike shut the door. That image connects the ending to the game that helped define the friends’ childhood and to the show’s own first moments. Netflix’s January 2, 2026 interview with co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer describes the scene and its intention. Ross Duffer put the idea plainly: “This is about this group of characters saying goodbye to their childhood.”
Matt Duffer described the broader theme in the same interview: “A lot of the finale is about growing up. It’s the end of a long coming-of-age story and part of coming of age is leaving your parents and making your own decisions.” The basement scene makes that theme legible without needing another explanation of the show’s mythology. The campaign is not just a callback; it turns a childhood ritual into a farewell, while Mike’s closing the door gives that farewell a simple visual endpoint. Is Stranger Things Netflix’s biggest show ever?
Netflix’s own figures support describing the franchise as a phenomenon, but they do not establish that this finale is the platform’s biggest title or its most-watched episode. In December 2025, Netflix said Seasons 1–4 had garnered more than 1.2 billion views to date and called that “the most views for any Netflix show.” That is a company-reported, franchise-level comparison—not an independent measurement or a count for “The Rightside Up.”
Netflix separately reported that Season 5 Volume 1 reached 102.6 million global views in its first four weeks. It also said Volume 1’s premiere week, at 59.6 million views, was the biggest in Netflix history for an English-language show. Those are different measures: a four-week total for Volume 1 and a premiere-week record, neither of which gives the finale’s episode-level audience. Netflix’s figures also chart the show’s reach beyond viewing: it reported Dungeons & Dragons universe growth of 673% between the Season 1 and Season 4 debuts, and more than 3.16 million U.S. sales of books, comics, and other publishing projects since Season 1. These are Netflix’s figures, as published in its December 2025 “By the Numbers” account.

Final verdict
“The Rightside Up” is an uneven finale with a genuine emotional payoff. The action-heavy opening risks burying the character drama that made the series matter; the closing stretch recovers it through friendship, growing up, and a full-circle return to the basement. If the question is whether the episode offers a perfect resolution from start to finish, it does not. If the question is whether the final episode ultimately gives the season its most meaningful goodbye, it does.
