The Season 5 twist that most directly revives “The Lost Sister” is Kali Prasad’s return. The Season 2 episode introduced Eleven’s fellow Hawkins Lab survivor and left her story hanging; in the final season, Kali has a consequential role in Eleven’s choices. That is separate from the Episode 4 reveal that Will develops powers.
Which Season 5 twist brings “The Lost Sister” back into the story?
Kali’s return is the link. “The Lost Sister,” Season 2, Episode 7, took Eleven from Hawkins to Chicago, where she met Kali—also known as Eight—and Kali’s group. Season 5 gives Kali a meaningful place in the endgame, making the earlier detour part of the series’ continuing story rather than a thread left behind.
There is another major Season 5 reveal that can be confused with it: Will develops powers and uses his connection to Vecna and the Upside Down. Netflix’s interview with Noah Schnapp identifies Will’s powers as the Episode 4 twist. Why was “The Lost Sister” controversial?
The episode breaks from the season’s main Hawkins storyline for a Chicago-set detour, introduces mostly new characters, and follows Eleven as she meets Kali and her group. That standalone structure and shift in setting made it a conspicuous departure from the season’s central action. It has often been described as divisive, but that label should not be mistaken for proof that all viewers disliked it.

Shawn Levy acknowledged the split in reception, describing the standalone episode as a risky creative choice: “It worked for some viewers. It didn’t work for others, but I respect the hell out of the Duffers for taking that big swing.” Matt and Ross Duffer later said the episode was not intended as a spinoff pilot. CinemaBlend’s account of the creators’ comments provides that context.
One available measure is a platform-specific user rating, not a representative audience poll. The Ringer reported an IMDb score of 6.0 for “The Lost Sister,” compared with an 8.6 average for Stranger Things episodes, citing Rating Graph. Those figures describe ratings on that platform; they cannot establish what viewers as a whole think. The Ringer’s episode coverage reports the comparison.

Why did the creators bring Kali back?
Matt Duffer said the creators had discussed bringing Kali back for a long time but had not found the right way to do it. While working on the final season, they wanted to finish every storyline, and her arc felt unresolved. “It was always nagging at us that the Kali storyline was hanging. So it was important to revisit it and complete her arc,” he said, according to CinemaBlend.
Levy’s remarks make the continuity intentional: the creators said they had not forgotten Kali or the plot strands established in Season 2. The return gives “The Lost Sister” more narrative relevance by carrying its character and consequences forward. It does not prove the episode works for every viewer in retrospect; it answers a story question, not a disagreement about pacing or tone.

What does Kali’s return mean for the final season?
In Netflix’s Volume 2 explainer, Kali asks Eleven to consider staying in the Upside Down when it explodes. Ross Duffer described the end of Episode 7 as leaving “a sense of dread or uncertainty” about what will happen to Eleven. At that point in the story, her fate is presented as an open question. Netflix Tudum’s Volume 2 explainer sets out the choice and its immediate context.
Season 5 is complete, so those stakes belong to a finished series rather than an ongoing rollout. Netflix’s retrospective describes the final season as eight episodes and summarizes Will’s transformation; Ross Duffer’s characterization of the season as the show’s “biggest” in action, visual effects, and story is his assessment, not an independently measured comparison.
