Barb Holland was nearly taken by the Demogorgon in the original Stranger Things pilot script—alongside Benny Hammond. Matt Duffer described the idea in a 2016 interview, saying the pilot was meant to establish that even sympathetic characters were not safe. That is a script detail, not evidence of a filmed or released alternate death scene.
What was Barb’s original death supposed to be?
In the original pilot script, Barb was “taken at the end of the episode,” Matt Duffer told The Daily Beast in 2016. The plan, as he described it, was for both Barb and Benny Hammond to be killed. The interview does not describe the scene’s visuals or establish exactly how Barb’s death would have appeared.
Duffer said the choice was intended to keep danger present even when the characters were “cute and lovable.” The point was not simply to add a death, but to make the audience understand that likable characters were not automatically protected by the story.
How does the pilot idea differ from the released story?
| Version | Who was slated to be taken by the episode’s end | What the account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Original pilot script, as Matt Duffer recalled in 2016 | Benny and Barb | A script idea intended to establish that no one was safe; the interview does not establish that the scene was filmed or released. |
| Released Season 1 story | Benny dies in the early story; Barb is taken later, after Nancy and Steve leave her alone at Steve’s pool. | The aired story gave Barb a distinct disappearance thread and made the town’s limited attention to her fate part of the character’s impact. |
The released story’s emphasis on Barb’s absence helped make her memorable despite her brief screen presence. In a later interview with TIME, the Duffer brothers said Barb appeared in only two Season 1 episodes. Matt Duffer said they created her to give Nancy a direct connection to the supernatural events: Barb was a nerdy, academically inclined friend being drawn toward the popular crowd, a tension the brothers recognized from high school.

Was there a deleted or alternate Barb death scene?
The interview establishes an early pilot-script plan, not a deleted scene. It does not show that the Barb version was filmed, included in a released cut, or documented in production records. A separate 2022 ABC News Australia report about post-release edits and visual-effects patches discusses a different issue; it does not verify an alternate Barb scene.
That distinction matters: “Barb was originally going to die in the pilot” is accurate if it refers to the script idea Duffer recalled. Saying viewers can watch a more graphic, deleted version goes beyond what these accounts establish.

Why did Barb’s fate resonate?
The Duffers later described character deaths as consequential because they create season-long effects; Matt Duffer told TIME that they are careful about whom they kill so each death carries weight. Barb’s limited appearances, disappearance, and the sense that the town moved on without her helped turn her into a notable thread in Season 1. The brothers recalled that Netflix repeatedly asked about Barb and her family as scripts were being submitted. That is their recollection of the response, not a measured audience statistic.
TIME also reported the brothers’ recollection that Barb had 25 lines in the series. That count is their reported figure, rather than an independently audited transcript count.
