After King Vichitravirya dies without heirs, Satyavati arranges for her son Vyasa to father children with the widowed queens Ambika and Ambalika—and, in a third encounter, with a maid. The Mahabharata tells how the women’s different responses to Vyasa shape the births of Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura, three brothers whose origins set the Kuru succession in motion.
Why did Vyasa father the Kuru princes?
Vichitravirya, king of the Kuru dynasty, dies without children. To preserve the royal line, his mother Satyavati asks Bhishma to approve a plan: she will summon Vyasa, her son by the sage Parashara, to father heirs with Vichitravirya’s widows.

The episode is described as niyoga—an arranged begetting of heirs within the story. Vyasa agrees to Satyavati’s request, and she sends the widows to him in turn. The account presents this as a response to a dynastic crisis, not as a general description of how families or succession worked in every setting.
The sequence appears in the Ganguli English prose translation and in the Adi Parva episode numbered 1.100 in Vedapath’s verse-level presentation. The numbering and wording differ across editions and translations; these accounts should not be treated as a full comparison of textual variants.

How were Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura born?
Ambika and Dhritarashtra
Satyavati first sends Ambika, Vichitravirya’s elder queen, to Vyasa. Frightened by his ascetic appearance, Ambika closes her eyes. Vyasa tells Satyavati that Ambika will have a powerful son, but that he will be blind. The Ganguli translation gives Vyasa’s explanation as: “But from the fault of his mother he shall be blind.” Ambika gives birth to Dhritarashtra.
This is the epic’s narrative explanation for Dhritarashtra’s blindness, not a medical account of how blindness occurs.

Ambalika and Pandu
Satyavati then sends Ambalika. She turns pale when she sees Vyasa. He predicts that her child will be pale and says the child will be called Pandu. Ambalika gives birth to Pandu, whose name and pale complexion are linked in the story to her reaction.
The maid and Vidura
Satyavati wants the elder queen to meet Vyasa again, but Ambika refuses and sends her maid in her place, dressed in her ornaments. The maid greets Vyasa respectfully and remains composed. He predicts that her son will be fortunate, virtuous, and highly intelligent, and says she will no longer be a slave. The child is Vidura, brother to Dhritarashtra and Pandu.
The narrative also connects Vidura with Dharma and the curse of Mandavya. The three births therefore share a father, Vyasa, but have different mothers: Ambika, Ambalika, and the maid.

Bhishma raises the three boys as his own sons. In the Ganguli account, Pandu becomes king because Dhritarashtra is blind. Vidura does not receive the kingdom because his mother is described in that translation as belonging to a lower social status. These are the succession rules and assumptions presented by the text’s historical narrative; they should not be read as a present-day judgment about disability, birth, or social groups.

The sequence helps explain the brothers’ distinct places in the epic: Dhritarashtra is the blind elder prince, Pandu becomes king and father of the Pandavas, and Vidura is remembered for his intelligence and virtue.
