Stone Cold Steve Austin’s most recognizable line is “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!” He delivered it in a post-match promo after defeating Jake “The Snake” Roberts to win the 1996 King of the Ring tournament. The moment helped turn Austin 3:16 into a catchphrase and marked a turning point in Austin’s rise, according to WWE’s retrospective.
What did Austin say, and when?
WWE records the line as: “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!” Austin said it in a post-match interview after winning the King of the Ring final against Jake Roberts in 1996. WWE describes the promo as a turning point in his rise and says the phrase became a pop-culture catchphrase.
The precise wording matters: WWE’s published version says “whipped,” not “whooped.” Informal retellings sometimes use the latter, but it should not be substituted when quoting WWE’s account.
How did “Austin 3:16” come about?
In a later WWE interview, Austin recalled that he was having his lip stitched after a match with Marc Mero when he heard Roberts refer to John 3:16. Austin remembered seeing John 3:16 signs at football games. After winning the tournament, he said, the Austin 3:16 wording came to him on the fly.

Austin did not describe the phrase’s success as a carefully planned campaign. Reflecting on how far it traveled, he said: “So it was pretty much just pure luck that ‘Austin 3:16’ would become what it did.”
What does “Austin 3:16” mean?
The phrase plays on the familiar biblical reference John 3:16, which Roberts had invoked, and turns it into a boast directed at Austin’s defeated opponent. In WWE’s quoted line, “Austin 3:16” introduces the punchline: “says I just whipped your ass.” The meaning comes from that contrast between a recognizable religious reference and Austin’s blunt wrestling persona.

Are these Austin’s definitive “most iconic” quotes?
“Austin 3:16” is the best-documented and most immediately recognizable Austin quote in WWE’s retrospective and Austin’s own account. Other expressions, including “Gimme a Hell Yeah” and “that’s the bottom line,” are widely associated with him, but the available official material cited here does not establish their original contexts or support a definitive ranking of his lines.
WWE’s official biography places the 1996 promo within the beginning of the Austin 3:16 era and his shift into the Stone Cold persona; it is career context, not a quote-by-quote catalog. Any list ranking several lines as Austin’s “greatest” should therefore be understood as an editorial selection unless each line is checked against its original segment or an official transcript.
