What was Channing doing when Grease came out?
Channing played Betty Rizzo, leader of the Pink Ladies, in the 1978 film Grease. CBS News reported that she was 34 when she took the role—a notable contrast with the high-school student she portrayed. CBS News’ biography of Stockard Channing.
In a 2018 interview, Channing reflected on the film’s enduring reach: “Who knew it was going to have such a tremendous impact, much less a long life?” She also said, “I had no idea it was going to be this mega thing it’s turned into.” Broadway.com’s 2018 interview with Channing.

How did her career extend beyond Grease?
Channing’s work continued across stage and screen. CBS News says she joined The West Wing as First Lady Abbey Bartlet in 1999, first in a recurring role and later as a regular. Broadway.com’s career summary notes that she won a Tony Award for A Day in the Death of Joe Egg and received Oscar and Tony nominations for Six Degrees of Separation. These later roles help place the 1979 magazine retrospective in the context of a long career, rather than treating Rizzo as the whole story.
