PerthNow’s STM Hotlist, published on 18 January 2016, named 20 people and musical acts it expected to attract attention over the following year. It was a contemporary forecast—not a current ranking or a verdict on which predictions came true. The selections ranged across music, screen and stage, comedy, modelling, fashion blogging and business. Read the original PerthNow/STM feature.
Music: artists and acts on the rise
Troye Sivan
The Perth-born singer was presented as a YouTube-originated artist whose online following was translating into live performances and international attention. The feature identified Blue Neighbourhood as his first studio album, released on 4 December 2015, and discussed the early release of “Wild.” It also noted his acting work in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the Spud films. PerthNow/STM reported more than 3.8 million YouTube fans, 3.1 million Instagram followers and 3.29 million Twitter followers; it did not give a measurement date or identify the underlying platform data, so these are historical figures reported in 2016, not current counts. The article quotes Sivan recalling his first tour performance: “I walked out on the stage at the first show and couldn’t even hear myself sing the first line, because everyone was singing it with me.”

Catlips (Katie Campbell)
The feature described Campbell as a 22-year-old Perth electronic music producer and DJ signed to local label Pilerats. Festival bookings and an anticipated video for “Silver Smoke” helped make her a Hotlist selection. The article attributes this thought on musicianship to Campbell: “Successful musicians work so hard. They make music because that’s what they are obsessed with.”
Jess and Matt
The duo—Jess Dunbar and Matt Price—had placed third on The X Factor, signed with Sony Music Australia and released the single “Nothing Matters.”

How to read the Hotlist now
The selections were based on signs of anticipated visibility—forthcoming releases, roles, broadcasts, festivals, tours and brand work—not a shared measure of achievement. Many of the reasons were future-facing in January 2016. The feature itself does not provide a systematic follow-up on what happened to each prediction, so the list is best read as a snapshot of what PerthNow’s STM considered promising at that moment, rather than a retrospective scorecard.
