Steve McQueen’s net worth when he died in 1980 is not established by a reliable public estate accounting in the sources available. That means no widely repeated death-time estimate can be presented as authoritative. The figures that can be traced refer to different things: a reported accountant’s projection from 1962, later rankings of McQueen’s posthumous earnings, and prices paid for individual collectibles.
Is Steve McQueen’s net worth at death known?
No substantiated final estate valuation is available in the sources cited here. Net worth at death would mean the value of McQueen’s assets minus his liabilities at a particular date. Without a documented accounting of both, a precise figure cannot be verified.

Online estimates should therefore be treated as unverified unless they can be tied to an estate accounting. Figures that measure later income or the sale of one object cannot fill that gap.
What the reported figures actually measure
| Figure | Date or period | What it represents | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| $172,000 | 1962 | An accountant’s projection of McQueen’s total net worth, reported retrospectively by Christopher Sandford. It is a dated snapshot, not a valuation at death. | Bright Lights Film Journal, March 24, 2022 |
| $8 million | 2012 ranking | A posthumous earnings figure in Forbes’ dead-celebrities ranking, published in 2013; it is not a balance sheet. | Forbes, May 24, 2013 |
| $9 million | 2015 ranking | A posthumous earnings figure, not McQueen’s net worth at death. | Forbes, October 28, 2015 |
| $9 million | 2016 ranking | A posthumous earnings figure in a ranking published in 2017. Forbes referred to historical deals involving TAG Heuer, Porsche, Persol and Barbour. | Forbes, March 1, 2017 |
| $6 million | 2006 earnings, as reported in 2011 | Inman reported that Forbes placed McQueen tenth among top-earning dead celebrities in 2007, with licensing of his name earning $6 million in the prior year. This is a secondhand account of a ranking-period earnings claim. | Inman, February 28, 2011 |
| $3.4 million hammer; $3.74 million including buyer fees | 2020 | The sale price of the 1968 Bullitt Mustang, a single collectible-car transaction—not an estate valuation. | Los Angeles Times, January 10, 2020 |
What the 1962 estimate says—and what it does not
Christopher Sandford’s 2022 article reports that an accountant’s June 1962 projection put McQueen’s total net worth at $172,000. The article says the projection included $66,500 in bank funds, two houses and various investments, and describes a letter held in the Steve McQueen Archive at the Margaret Herrick Library. This is a retrospective report of archival material, not an independently published final estate statement.

#1 Best Overall
The figure is useful only as a snapshot from 1962. It predates McQueen’s death by about 18 years; it cannot establish his 1980 finances, and there is no documented method here for projecting it forward.
Why Forbes’ figures are not net worth
Forbes’ dead-celebrities rankings report earnings attributed to deceased public figures over a ranking period. Those income figures can reflect licensing or other commercial activity after death. They do not show the assets and liabilities McQueen had in 1980, nor do they establish what an estate ultimately retained after costs or distributions.
Rank #2
The $8 million and $9 million figures belong to their respective ranking years. They should not be combined with the 1962 projection or averaged into a supposed death-time estimate: the measures and dates are different.

The 1984 estate auction
Steve McQueen Online describes saleable estate assets being auctioned over two days at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas in 1984. The page does not state an overall estate valuation, total auction proceeds, probate value, tax burden or distribution to heirs. An auction of selected saleable property is not a complete accounting of assets and liabilities.

The 1968 Bullitt Mustang associated with McQueen sold in 2020 for $3.4 million at hammer, or $3.74 million including buyer fees, according to the Los Angeles Times. That price reflects one car changing hands decades later; it does not reveal McQueen’s net worth at death. Provenance, condition, fees and collector demand all bear on an individual collectible’s price.

How to read claims about McQueen’s fortune
- Ask what the number measures. A net-worth estimate, annual posthumous earnings figure and auction result are different categories.
- Check the date and attribution. The $172,000 figure is a 1962 accountant’s projection as reported in 2022; the Forbes figures refer to later ranking periods.
- Look for a complete accounting. A credible death-time net-worth claim needs evidence about both assets and liabilities at the relevant date, not just a sale price or income ranking.
- Do not turn unlike figures into a range. Averaging a dated projection, later earnings and a collectible sale would produce a number with no meaningful accounting basis.
