The band’s manager, Robert Hayes, said Harwell died at home in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by family and friends, and attributed the cause of death to acute liver failure.

Hayes announced Harwell’s death and said the singer was with family and friends at his Boise home. Hayes attributed the death to acute liver failure; that is the cause reported by the manager, not an independent medical determination.

What was known about Harwell’s health?
Separately from Hayes’s statement about the cause of death, The Associated Press reported that Smash Mouth had said Harwell was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy eight years earlier and had experienced “nonstop serious medical setbacks including heart failure as well as acute Wernicke Encephalopathy.” Those previously reported conditions should not be conflated with the manager’s attribution of acute liver failure.
How Steve Harwell helped define Smash Mouth
Born in California in 1967, Harwell performed with the rap group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech) before forming Smash Mouth in 1994. The band’s ska-influenced debut arrived in 1997, followed by Astro Lounge in 1999. The Associated Press described both albums as platinum.

Astro Lounge featured “All Star,” which received a Grammy nomination and platinum certification. The song became closely associated with the band’s appearance in Shrek, alongside Smash Mouth’s cover of the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer.” Other hits included “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “Then The Morning Comes.”
Harwell’s departure from the band
Harwell retired from performing and left Smash Mouth in 2021. The band continued touring with singer Zach Goode, so Harwell was no longer performing with Smash Mouth when he died.

How the band’s manager remembered him
Hayes called Harwell “a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle,” and said, “Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.”
