During the January 7, 2025, Pacific Palisades Fire evacuation, actor and neighborhood resident Steve Guttenberg urged people leaving cars behind to leave their keys so they could be moved and fire engines could get through. The word “unrecognizable” in coverage of the aftermath described the fire-damaged neighborhood—not Guttenberg’s appearance.
Why Guttenberg asked evacuees to leave their keys
As residents fled Pacific Palisades, abandoned cars were blocking routes needed by emergency crews. Guttenberg walked to help move vehicles and appealed to drivers not to leave them locked in the way. Speaking to KTLA during the evacuation, he said: “If you leave your car behind, leave the key in there so a guy like me can move your car so that these fire trucks can get up there.” (KTLA)
He also told KTLA, “This is not a parking lot,” as he described the urgent need to clear access. (Associated Press)
What was happening in Pacific Palisades
In its January 7, 2025, report, the Associated Press said about 30,000 residents were under evacuation orders and more than 13,000 structures were under threat. What “unrecognizable” means in the headline
The AP’s January 10 follow-up described Guttenberg’s neighborhood as charred and “unrecognizable.” The adjective referred to the community altered by the fire; it did not say that Guttenberg himself looked unrecognizable. (Associated Press)
What happened to Guttenberg’s home and how he helped afterward
The AP reported that Guttenberg’s home was spared. After returning to the area, he helped neighbors and handed out food. The January 10 account places those actions after his evacuation-day effort to clear cars, showing that his assistance continued beyond the initial appeal to drivers. (Associated Press)
