Stephen has a strong psychological-thriller hook: a man confesses to killing nine women, and a psychiatrist must test whether his account is genuine or part of a darker game. The film’s atmosphere and Gomathi Shankar’s restrained lead performance drew praise, but several critics found the investigation repetitive and the twists unevenly handled. The result is a mixed thriller whose mood and premise do not consistently become a satisfying story.
What is Stephen about?
After nine girls disappear, a man confesses to killing them. A psychiatrist evaluates him as investigators try to establish what happened and why. Rather than making the mystery simply about identifying a killer, the film turns toward motive, credibility and the possibility that the confession conceals another game. That shift gives it the shape of a psychological “whydunit.”

Netflix describes the film as a story in which a psychiatrist investigates a self-confessed serial killer and begins to question whether he is guilty or a victim in a darker scheme. Director Mithun described its central figure as “a calm, calculated serial killer, who carries secrets which are unsettlingly personal” in Netflix’s announcement. The premise is best approached without knowing how its revelations resolve.
Where the thriller works—and where it loses momentum
Performance and atmosphere
Gomathi Shankar’s controlled performance is one of the film’s most consistently noted strengths. Reviewers also singled out the tense mood, cinematography and score as assets. These elements help establish unease, particularly when the story asks viewers to weigh what the characters say against what they may be withholding.

#1 Best Overall
That atmosphere is not the same as psychological depth, however. Scroll.in’s Nandini Ramnath praised Shankar’s performance while arguing that the film offers limited psychological insight. The distinction matters: a composed, unsettling lead can hold attention even when the writing does not fully develop the character’s inner life.
Investigation and pacing
The central investigation gives the film a natural engine, but its progress can feel stop-start. The Indian Express’s Shubhra Gupta pointed to predictable developments and repeated explanatory scenes; Scroll.in also criticized stretched suspense and gaps in the police investigation. Scroll reports a runtime of 123 minutes, a substantial stretch for a story whose reveals and explanations some critics found overextended.

The criticism is not that a slow-burn thriller must move quickly. It is that repetition and investigative gaps can weaken suspense rather than deepen it: viewers need each pause or new clue to sharpen the uncertainty, not merely restate it.
Twists and payoff
Responses to the film’s reveals are divided. The Indian Express found the final act chilling and effective, and Cinema Express’s Jayabhuvaneshwari B praised the psychological angle and payoff. At the same time, Cinema Express noted convenient shortcuts and visible red herrings. India Today’s K Janani argued that the late reveal undercuts the character study and leaves questions unresolved.

- Factory sealed DVD
That split captures the film’s main risk: a twist-driven story can feel rewarding when its revelations grow naturally from character and evidence, but arbitrary or over-signposted when they do not. Critics who valued the payoff found an effective final stretch; those less persuaded saw the ending as a problem for the story’s psychological foundations.
What critics say overall
The published reviews sampled here are mixed, not evidence of a general audience consensus. India Today and The Indian Express each rated the film 2.5 out of 5, while Cinema Express gave it 3 out of 5. Their assessments point to a shared tradeoff: performance and mood have appeal, but pacing, screenwriting and the final explanation do not work equally well for everyone.
For a point-in-time snapshot, Rotten Tomatoes listed six critic reviews in the observed sample. That small number is not enough to treat an aggregate score as a broad verdict, so individual reviews offer more useful detail about what succeeds and what frustrates.

It is a reasonable choice if you enjoy Tamil psychological thrillers built around unreliable accounts, concealed motives and a late reveal, and are willing to accept an uneven investigation. It is a less assured recommendation if you want tightly escalating police work or a character study that stays coherent through its ending. The film’s strongest case is its lead performance and tense presentation; its weakest is the gap between an intriguing premise and a storyline that critics found repetitive, predictable or insufficiently resolved.
