He showed the audience his resume and an older headshot, then asked Harrison Ford to pass the resume to Steven Spielberg.
What Colbert said onstage
The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles on September 14, 2025. Colbert presented Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, the ceremony’s first award. As the audience applauded, he tried to move the show along before asking, “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?” AP News and CNN reported the line.

He continued: “Because I’ve got 200 very well-qualified candidates with me here tonight. We’ll be available in June.” The 200 was Colbert’s onstage description of the candidates, not an independently verified staff headcount.
Why he made the hiring joke
CBS had announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end after its upcoming season. Axios reported that CBS cited financial reasons for the cancellation. Colbert’s gag turned the uncertainty facing the show’s crew into a direct appeal to the entertainment industry in the room: the joke was self-deprecating, but it also drew attention to staff members’ future employment.
#1 Best Overall
The timing in the joke and the reported end of the show are distinct. Colbert said the candidates would be available in June; the Associated Press reported that the show was expected to go off air in May 2026. CNN also reported the expected May 2026 end. Those were reported expectations, not the same claim as Colbert’s punchline.

After mentioning the candidates, Colbert produced his resume and an older headshot. He then asked Harrison Ford, “I only have the one, so Harrison Ford, could you get this to Spielberg?” The request to get Steven Spielberg the resume extended the bit from a broad hiring appeal into a comic attempt to find Colbert work. AP News and LateNighter reported the exchange.
The evening’s later result
Later in the ceremony, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Talk Series for the first time. The win came after CBS had announced the show’s cancellation, giving the earlier hiring joke a pointed context without changing its status as a joke rather than an employment announcement. Axios and CNN reported the award.
